Logistics and storage for wine estates
Wine estates face specific constraints: wine storage temperature, regulated storage of plant protection products, harvest logistics. The shipping container offers modular, cost-effective solutions for each of these needs, without tying up capital in permanent construction.

Container uses in wine growing
Wine estates face radically different storage constraints depending on the season: temperature-controlled storage of wine during aging, regulatory containment of plant protection products, and housing seasonal workers during the harvest. A fitted-out shipping container meets each of these needs independently, with no permanent construction or land tie-up.
Industry constraints
How containers meet the constraints of wine estate operations
-
Thermal protection — stable temperature even during heatwaves
Our Reefer containers are designed to operate at outside temperatures of up to +45°C. In the vineyards of Provence or Languedoc, they keep your wines at 14°C without effort. The built-in data logger produces a continuous temperature curve for your certification file.
-
Seasonal modularity — add units during the harvest, remove them afterward
The harvest is a few intense weeks each year. It would be pointless to invest in permanent buildings for this period. Our containers arrive before the harvest and leave afterward. You only pay for what you need, when you need it.
-
Certiphyto compliance — plant protection product storage to standard
The Certiphyto inspector checks that your plant protection product storage area is ventilated, sealed, secure and accessible only to certificate holders. Our plant protection product containers have been designed to meet these regulatory requirements point by point.
The container types most used in wine growing
The Reefer guarantees the thermal stability essential to wine aging even during heatwaves, while the 20 ft Dry container offers the versatility needed to store casks, barrels and bottling packaging. These standardized formats blend discreetly into existing wineries and can be repositioned from one plot to another according to the estate's needs.
-
Reefer or insulated container
The Reefer container is the go-to solution for temperature-controlled wine storage. Its industrial refrigeration unit maintains temperature within ±0.5°C between +2°C and +20°C. The insulated container (without an active unit) suits areas with low temperature swings. Both keep out light completely, which is essential for preservation.
-
Fitted-out plant protection product container
This module is specially designed for storing plant protection products. It includes low and high ventilation for extracting toxic fumes, a stainless steel spill containment tray, a locked safety cabinet and regulatory signage. It meets the full set of Certiphyto and Rural Code requirements.
-
20 ft dry container
The Dry container is the versatile solution for wine estates. Sealed, dark and stable in humidity, it holds 30 to 35 Bordeaux barrels or all of your bottling packaging. Its treated wood floor resists moisture and handling equipment.
Standards
Wine industry standards and regulations to comply with
-
Rural and Maritime Fishing Code
The Rural Code strictly governs the storage of plant protection products on farms. It notably requires a dedicated, locked, ventilated area fitted with a spill containment tray. Failure to comply exposes the operator to penalties and may lead to suspension of their Certiphyto certificate.
-
Certiphyto
The Certiphyto certificate has been mandatory for the purchase and use of professional plant protection products since 2014. It requires precise storage conditions: a separate, ventilated, secure, clearly identified area. Our plant protection product containers are designed to meet the Certiphyto inspection framework point by point.
-
HACCP
HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) risk analysis applies to wineries producing certified quality wines. It requires the identification and control of every critical point that could contaminate the wine. Storing plant protection products separately in a dedicated container is a control measure that can be directly credited in your HACCP plan.
FAQ
FAQ: your questions about containers and wine growing
Find answers to the most common questions about our containers and services.
Can a Reefer container maintain 14°C in the middle of summer in the vineyard?
Yes, even in the hottest regions of France. Our refrigeration units are sized to operate at outside temperatures of up to +45°C. Power consumption runs at around 3 to 5 kWh per day depending on the season, which is less than €2 per day at the professional EDF rate.
Do I need a permit to install a plant protection product container on the estate?
For an installation of less than 3 months, no authorization is required. Beyond that, a prior declaration of works is generally sufficient for a surface area under 20 m². In AOC zones, certain local planning regulations may impose aesthetic requirements; we recommend checking with your town hall. Compliance with the Rural Code for the plant protection product storage area, however, is mandatory from day one.
How many barrels can be stored in a 20 ft container?
A standard 20 ft container (internal length 5.90 m) holds between 30 and 35 Bordeaux barrels of 225 liters arranged in two rows. With suitable metal racks allowing two-tier stacking, capacity can reach up to 40 barrels. A 40 ft container doubles this capacity to 70-80 barrels.
Can a Reefer container be installed in an AOC area without impacting certification?
Installing a container has no direct impact on your AOC certification, as it concerns winemaking practices and the production area, not storage infrastructure. We nonetheless recommend informing your appellation's Defense and Management Body (ODG) to avoid any misunderstanding during an inspection, and checking local planning regulations if the container is visible from the public road.
