      Reefer ; Refrigerated Container

      What is a Reefer container?

A Reefer container — short for refrigerated — is an active refrigerated unit. Unlike an ordinary transport box, it carries an integrated refrigeration unit made by a leading manufacturer (Carrier, Thermoking, Daikin) that continuously produces and regulates cold. The set-point temperature is held between −25 °C and +25 °C, regardless of outside conditions.

This is what fundamentally distinguishes the Reefer from an isothermal container. An isothermal container is passive: its insulated walls merely slow heat exchange without ever producing cold; the temperature always drifts in the end. The Reefer, by contrast, is active: it actively compensates for heat ingress and maintains the set point for as long as it is supplied with electricity.

This active regulation makes the Reefer the benchmark for maritime transport under cold chain. Frozen goods, fresh produce, cut flowers, vaccines and medicines, fine wines: all cargo whose quality depends on a stable temperature travels in a Reefer. The container continuously logs the temperature, making it possible to prove on arrival that the cold chain was never broken.

      • Active refrigeration unit

The integrated unit regulates temperature between −25 °C and +25 °C to within a degree. Electronic monitoring continuously records the set point — proof that the cold chain was maintained from start to finish of the transit.
      • Three-phase power supply

The refrigeration unit connects to a 380-460 V three-phase supply — at the terminal, aboard the vessel, or via a standalone generator set (genset). As long as it is powered, the Reefer holds its set point without interruption.
      • T-rail floor

The floor is made up of T-shaped rails that create an air passage beneath the cargo. Cold air circulates all around the load, ensuring a uniform temperature — no hot spots — at every level of the stack.
      • ATP compliance

The ATP Agreement governs the transport of perishable goods across Europe. ATP compliance certifies that the container meets the thermal performance requirements set by regulation for chilled and frozen goods.

      In detail

What is a used 20 ft Reefer shipping container?

A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: a built-in refrigeration unit produces and maintains a chosen temperature, adjustable from −25 °C to +25 °C. "Used" means the unit has already spent several years in maritime service, then been reconditioned; inspected and refurbished at our French depots. The 20 ft format is the standard for refrigerated logistics.

The box is made of fully welded Corten steel, a steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, with a stainless steel interior finish. Before shipping, the refrigeration unit is tested (refrigeration unit manufacturer or refrigeration equipment manufacturer depending on the unit), watertightness checked and the aluminum T-rail floor cleaned.

Usable capacity remains 28.4 m³ for a 27,230 kg allowed load; identical to the new model. A few marks of use remain on the surface, worn paint, lashing marks, localized oxidation, with no effect on thermal regulation or compliance.

      In detail

How do you power a Reefer container?

Unlike an insulated container, which only slows heat exchange, a Reefer actively produces cold. It therefore needs a constant power supply.

The refrigeration unit plugs into a 380-460 V three-phase supply, via a 32 A industrial socket. At a quay or in a warehouse, connection is made to the mains. In transit or on an isolated site, a generator, the "genset", takes over. Planning for this power supply is essential: without electricity, the cold chain is broken.

      Applications

Keeping your goods at the right temperature

Reconditioned, this 20 ft unit delivers regulation that meets professional requirements, for a standard refrigerated volume at a controlled cost.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Fresh distribution products

Dairy products, cut fruit or ready meals kept around 4 °C on regional flows.

      • Large-volume cosmetics

Creams, serums and sensitive products kept between 8 °C and 18 °C depending on the formulation.

      • Food export

Fine chocolates at 18 °C, frozen pastries at −18 °C, processed products for large retailers.

      • Beverages and spirits

Stable-temperature storage for controlled-fermentation beverages and high-value spirits.

      Highlights

Why buy a used 20 ft Reefer shipping container

The 20 ft Reefer is the standard of global refrigerated logistics; and a used unit offers its certified volume at a controlled cost. The strengths below show how reconditioning secures the refrigeration unit, the element that determines a Reefer's value, and why a well-tested unit delivers the reliability of new.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Refrigerated volume at the right price

28.4 m³ certified, the segment standard, without the premium of a new model. The budget gap is significant on a product where the refrigeration unit weighs heavily.

      • Reconditioned refrigeration unit

The refrigeration unit manufacturer's or refrigeration equipment manufacturer's unit is tested and overhauled at the depot, and the refrigerant gas checked before delivery. Thermal performance is checked, not just assumed.

      • Managed maintenance

An annual preventive maintenance contract can be taken out to preserve the unit's lifespan. This follow-up is what secures a used refrigeration unit over the long term.

      • Fast repairs

Refrigeration technicians step in in case of an incident to limit any break in the cold chain. On a Reefer, an unaddressed failure directly compromises the goods.

      • Re-validated compliance

The CSC and ATP plates are reissued and Cargo Worthy status is granted after inspection by an accredited body. The unit remains fit for maritime and regulated transport.

      • Sustainable approach

Extending the life of an existing Reefer saves several tons of steel and a new refrigeration unit; material- and component-intensive equipment.

      Options available on request

The following options can be added to Used and First-trip versions depending on availability and specifications: PVC strip curtain, LED light pack, person-trapped-inside alarm, 1/3 - 2/3 door with easy-open handle, anti-panic interior opening mechanism, automatic humidity control, flat floor.

      Applications

What is the price of a used 20 ft Reefer shipping container

The used 20 ft Reefer follows an active secondary market, where shipping operator fleet retirements, European demand and reconditioning costs intersect.

      Four factors drive price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.

      • Refrigerated shipping demand

A slowdown in food exports sends units back to the secondary market and weighs on prices.

      • Refrigeration unit and refrigerant gas cost

On used units, the unit overhaul and the value of the gas in the circuit weigh as much as the box's residual value.

      • Logistics bottlenecks

A lack of reprocessing yard space or an ATP/CSC inspection delay quickly tightens available stock.

      • Downstream costs

Transit to the depots, handling suited to the Reefer's size and re-certification add to the purchase price.
