      Reefer ; Refrigerated Container

      What is a Reefer container?

A Reefer container — short for refrigerated — is an active refrigerated unit. Unlike an ordinary transport box, it carries an integrated refrigeration unit made by a leading manufacturer (Carrier, Thermoking, Daikin) that continuously produces and regulates cold. The set-point temperature is held between −25 °C and +25 °C, regardless of outside conditions.

This is what fundamentally distinguishes the Reefer from an isothermal container. An isothermal container is passive: its insulated walls merely slow heat exchange without ever producing cold; the temperature always drifts in the end. The Reefer, by contrast, is active: it actively compensates for heat ingress and maintains the set point for as long as it is supplied with electricity.

This active regulation makes the Reefer the benchmark for maritime transport under cold chain. Frozen goods, fresh produce, cut flowers, vaccines and medicines, fine wines: all cargo whose quality depends on a stable temperature travels in a Reefer. The container continuously logs the temperature, making it possible to prove on arrival that the cold chain was never broken.

      • Active refrigeration unit

The integrated unit regulates temperature between −25 °C and +25 °C to within a degree. Electronic monitoring continuously records the set point — proof that the cold chain was maintained from start to finish of the transit.
      • Three-phase power supply

The refrigeration unit connects to a 380-460 V three-phase supply — at the terminal, aboard the vessel, or via a standalone generator set (genset). As long as it is powered, the Reefer holds its set point without interruption.
      • T-rail floor

The floor is made up of T-shaped rails that create an air passage beneath the cargo. Cold air circulates all around the load, ensuring a uniform temperature — no hot spots — at every level of the stack.
      • ATP compliance

The ATP Agreement governs the transport of perishable goods across Europe. ATP compliance certifies that the container meets the thermal performance requirements set by regulation for chilled and frozen goods.

      In detail

What is a used 10 ft Reefer shipping container?

A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: a built-in refrigeration unit produces and maintains a chosen temperature, adjustable from −25 °C to +25 °C. "Used" means the unit has already spent several years in maritime service, then been reconditioned; inspected and refurbished at our French depots. The 10 ft format is the most compact in the range.

The box is made of Corten steel, a steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, with a stainless steel interior finish. Before shipping, each unit undergoes a cooling test at the depot: refrigeration unit performance validated, insulation checked, seals inspected or replaced.

The refrigeration unit is compatible with a refrigeration equipment manufacturer's or a refrigeration unit manufacturer's model depending on availability. A few marks of use remain on the surface, aged paint, lashing marks, surface oxidation, with no effect on thermal regulation or compliance. The 10 ft format offers 12.45 m³ usable for a 12,400 kg allowed load, at a cost lower than new.

      In detail

How do you power a Reefer container?

Unlike an insulated container, which only slows heat exchange, a Reefer actively produces cold. It therefore needs a constant power supply.

The refrigeration unit plugs into a 380-460 V three-phase supply, via a 32 A industrial socket. At a quay or in a warehouse, connection is made to the mains. In transit or on an isolated site, a generator, the "genset", takes over. Planning for this power supply is essential: without electricity, the cold chain is broken.

      Applications

Keeping your goods at the right temperature

Reconditioned, this compact Reefer offers the same regulation precision as a new unit, at a reduced acquisition cost.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Common pharmaceutical products

Antibiotics and stable preparations, kept between 2 °C and 8 °C in a supplementary cold room.

      • Sensitive chemical products

Reagents, industrial paints or specialty adhesives kept between −10 °C and +5 °C to preserve their integrity.

      • Optical equipment and instruments

Measuring devices and sensors requiring a stable temperature, around 15 °C.

      • Technology equipment

Backup batteries, remote servers or electronics sensitive to temperatures above 25 °C.

      Highlights

Why buy a used 10 ft Reefer shipping container

On a Reefer, the deciding factor is not the box but the refrigeration unit; it's what makes, or breaks, the value of the unit. The strengths below show how depot reconditioning secures this refrigeration unit and why a well-tested used Reefer offers the same thermal reliability as new, at a reduced cost.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Savings on the refrigeration unit

A used unit gives access to a certified Reefer without the premium of a first-trip unit. On a product where the refrigeration unit weighs more, in cost, than the steel, this price gap is substantial.

      • Tested refrigeration unit

The unit's performance is checked with a controlled cooling test at the depot before every delivery. The unit is only shipped once the set temperature is reached and held.

      • Managed maintenance

An annual preventive maintenance contract, refrigerant gas, components, exchangers, can be taken out at purchase. This follow-up is what preserves the lifespan of a used refrigeration unit.

      • Fast repairs

Refrigeration technicians step in in case of an incident to limit any break in the cold chain. On a Reefer, an unaddressed failure directly compromises the goods.

      • Re-validated compliance

The CSC and ATP plates are reissued by an accredited body after inspection. The unit remains fit for maritime transport and for the regulated transport of perishable goods.

      • Sustainable approach

Extending the life of an existing Reefer avoids manufacturing a new unit and its refrigeration unit; equipment that is particularly material- and component-intensive.

      Options available on request

The following options can be added to Used and First-trip versions depending on availability and specifications: PVC strip curtain, LED light pack, person-trapped-inside alarm, 1/3 - 2/3 door with easy-open handle, anti-panic interior opening mechanism, automatic humidity control, flat floor.

      Applications

What is the price of a used 10 ft Reefer shipping container

The used Reefer follows an active secondary market. The value of the reconditioned refrigeration unit weighs more here than that of the box; a different dynamic from Dry containers.

      Four factors drive price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.

      • Refrigerated shipping demand

European operators quickly absorb reconditioned 10 ft units when the global cold chain intensifies.

      • Refrigeration unit and refrigerant gas cost

On used units, refrigeration unit overhaul and the value of the gas in the circuit weigh as much as the structure.

      • Logistics bottlenecks

A reprocessing delay at a refrigerated shipping operator can hold up the arrival of used units in France for several weeks.

      • Downstream costs

Pre-carriage to the depots, suitable handling and returning the refrigeration unit to service add to the purchase price.
