      Reefer ; Refrigerated Container

      What is a Reefer container?

A Reefer container — short for refrigerated — is an active refrigerated unit. Unlike an ordinary transport box, it carries an integrated refrigeration unit made by a leading manufacturer (Carrier, Thermoking, Daikin) that continuously produces and regulates cold. The set-point temperature is held between −25 °C and +25 °C, regardless of outside conditions.

This is what fundamentally distinguishes the Reefer from an isothermal container. An isothermal container is passive: its insulated walls merely slow heat exchange without ever producing cold; the temperature always drifts in the end. The Reefer, by contrast, is active: it actively compensates for heat ingress and maintains the set point for as long as it is supplied with electricity.

This active regulation makes the Reefer the benchmark for maritime transport under cold chain. Frozen goods, fresh produce, cut flowers, vaccines and medicines, fine wines: all cargo whose quality depends on a stable temperature travels in a Reefer. The container continuously logs the temperature, making it possible to prove on arrival that the cold chain was never broken.

      • Active refrigeration unit

The integrated unit regulates temperature between −25 °C and +25 °C to within a degree. Electronic monitoring continuously records the set point — proof that the cold chain was maintained from start to finish of the transit.
      • Three-phase power supply

The refrigeration unit connects to a 380-460 V three-phase supply — at the terminal, aboard the vessel, or via a standalone generator set (genset). As long as it is powered, the Reefer holds its set point without interruption.
      • T-rail floor

The floor is made up of T-shaped rails that create an air passage beneath the cargo. Cold air circulates all around the load, ensuring a uniform temperature — no hot spots — at every level of the stack.
      • ATP compliance

The ATP Agreement governs the transport of perishable goods across Europe. ATP compliance certifies that the container meets the thermal performance requirements set by regulation for chilled and frozen goods.

      In detail

What is a first-trip 10 ft Reefer shipping container?

A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: a built-in refrigeration unit produces and maintains a chosen temperature, adjustable from −25 °C to +25 °C. The term "first-trip" (also called one-trip) means it is a new unit, straight from the factory after a single maritime trip. The 10 ft format is the most compact in the range.

The box is made of Corten steel, a steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, with a stainless steel finish on the walls and ceiling. The insulation, 7 cm polyurethane foam, wraps the entire box. The industrial refrigeration unit is new, compatible with a refrigeration equipment manufacturer or a refrigeration unit manufacturer depending on availability.

The T-rail floor lets cold air circulate under the goods and guarantees an even temperature, from floor to ceiling. With 12.45 m³ usable and a 12,400 kg allowed load, this format suits local refrigerated operations and small sensitive volumes.

      In detail

How do you power a Reefer container?

Unlike an insulated container, which only slows heat exchange, a Reefer actively produces cold. It therefore needs a constant power supply.

The refrigeration unit plugs into a 380-460 V three-phase supply, via a 32 A industrial socket. At a quay or in a warehouse, connection is made to the mains. In transit or on an isolated site, a generator, the "genset", takes over. Planning for this power supply is essential: without electricity, the cold chain is broken.

      Applications

Keeping your goods at the right temperature

Fine-tuned regulation and electronic temperature logging make this format compatible with a wide range of sensitive goods.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Fresh food products

Fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood kept between 0 °C and 4 °C.

      • Pharmaceutical products

Vaccines between 2 °C and 8 °C, or certain preparations down to −20 °C, with critical thermal stability.

      • Cosmetics and horticulture

Cosmetic products sensitive at 15-18 °C, bulbs and horticultural plants at 0-5 °C.

      • Technical equipment

Lithium batteries, measuring instruments or optical equipment requiring stable thermal conditions.

      Highlights

Why buy a first-trip 10 ft Reefer shipping container

The new 10 ft Reefer is a compact, self-contained cold room, delivered ready to run. The strengths below explain what new condition guarantees on refrigeration equipment, refrigeration unit reliability, original condition, customization options, and the service that comes with getting it running.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Self-contained refrigeration unit

Once the set point is reached, the refrigeration unit self-regulates with no manual intervention. It continuously offsets heat gain, which secures the goods with no permanent monitoring.

      • New condition

Corten box and stainless steel finish with no wear, original seals, intact paint. On a Reefer, this new condition also guarantees optimal insulation and thermal sealing from the very first cooling cycle.

      • Customizable

Movable partitions, strip curtains, specific interior paint or temperature alarms can be added as options. The cold room adapts precisely to the intended goods.

      • Managed maintenance

An annual preventive maintenance contract, refrigerant gas, components, parts, can be taken out at order. This follow-up is what preserves the unit's performance over time.

      • Fast repairs

Refrigeration technicians step in in case of a failure to limit any break in the cold chain. On a Reefer, an unaddressed interruption directly compromises the goods.

      • Multimodal transport

ISO 6346, ISO 1161 and CSC compliance authorizes maritime, rail or road shipping. The cold room moves with your operations, with no adaptation.

      Options available on request

The following options can be added to Used and First-trip versions depending on availability and specifications: PVC strip curtain, LED light pack, person-trapped-inside alarm, 1/3 - 2/3 door with easy-open handle, anti-panic interior opening mechanism, automatic humidity control, flat floor.

      Applications

What is the price of a first-trip 10 ft Reefer shipping container

The price of a new Reefer belongs to a market distinct from that of the Dry container. The refrigeration unit and refrigeration components weigh more here than the steel.

      Four factors drive price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.

      • Refrigerated shipping demand

Food and pharmaceutical exports concentrate Reefer units on main routes and make supply for sale scarcer.

      • Refrigeration unit and refrigerant gas cost

A new refrigeration equipment manufacturer's or refrigeration unit manufacturer's unit represents a major share of the price. Electronic component prices and refrigerant gas prices, the "F-gases", such as R134a or R452A, pass directly through to it.

      • Logistics bottlenecks

A port blockage or a health crisis creates shortages of refrigerated units within a few weeks.

      • Downstream costs

Refrigerated road transport, connection to a genset or truck power point, specialized handling and customs formalities add to the price of the container alone.
