      Reefer ; Refrigerated Container

      What is a Reefer container?

A Reefer container — short for refrigerated — is an active refrigerated unit. Unlike an ordinary transport box, it carries an integrated refrigeration unit made by a leading manufacturer (Carrier, Thermoking, Daikin) that continuously produces and regulates cold. The set-point temperature is held between −25 °C and +25 °C, regardless of outside conditions.

This is what fundamentally distinguishes the Reefer from an isothermal container. An isothermal container is passive: its insulated walls merely slow heat exchange without ever producing cold; the temperature always drifts in the end. The Reefer, by contrast, is active: it actively compensates for heat ingress and maintains the set point for as long as it is supplied with electricity.

This active regulation makes the Reefer the benchmark for maritime transport under cold chain. Frozen goods, fresh produce, cut flowers, vaccines and medicines, fine wines: all cargo whose quality depends on a stable temperature travels in a Reefer. The container continuously logs the temperature, making it possible to prove on arrival that the cold chain was never broken.

      • Active refrigeration unit

The integrated unit regulates temperature between −25 °C and +25 °C to within a degree. Electronic monitoring continuously records the set point — proof that the cold chain was maintained from start to finish of the transit.
      • Three-phase power supply

The refrigeration unit connects to a 380-460 V three-phase supply — at the terminal, aboard the vessel, or via a standalone generator set (genset). As long as it is powered, the Reefer holds its set point without interruption.
      • T-rail floor

The floor is made up of T-shaped rails that create an air passage beneath the cargo. Cold air circulates all around the load, ensuring a uniform temperature — no hot spots — at every level of the stack.
      • ATP compliance

The ATP Agreement governs the transport of perishable goods across Europe. ATP compliance certifies that the container meets the thermal performance requirements set by regulation for chilled and frozen goods.

      In detail

What is a used 40 ft Reefer Super Freezer container?

A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: an integrated cooling unit generates and maintains a chosen temperature. The Super Freezer is an ultra-specialized version: a 9'6" High Cube casing, raised by about 30 cm, fitted with an Ingersoll Rand-manufactured cooling unit designed for very low temperatures, down to −70°C.

This configuration was deployed massively during the COVID-19 pandemic, to transport and store mRNA vaccines, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which require strict storage around −70°C. Outside of vaccination campaigns, the Super Freezer remains a niche piece of equipment.

The casing is made of Corten steel, a weathering steel that resists marine corrosion, with an HACCP food-grade stainless steel finish. Its polyurethane foam insulation is reinforced to limit heat loss at extreme temperatures. It serves research biobanks, sensitive pharmaceutical active ingredients and high-end ultra-fresh products.

For a Used version, National Conteneur uses this technical base as a reference, then qualifies each unit according to its actual condition: structure, weatherproofing, doors, floor, markings, documents and equipment specific to the product family. The technical information therefore remains that of the model, while cosmetic condition, availability and certificates depend on the batch offered.

      In detail

      Understanding the ultra-low-temperature cold chain

Most maritime refrigerated containers operate between −25°C and +25°C. This range is enough for industrial frozen foods, fresh agri-food products and routine pharmaceuticals. The Super Freezer goes much lower, down to −70°C; a technological leap reserved for the molecules most sensitive to heat.

mRNA technology is the emblematic example. Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines require −70°C, within 10°C, to preserve the integrity of the molecule: beyond −60°C, the RNA degrades quickly. Moderna vaccines tolerate a range of −50°C to −20°C depending on the distribution protocol. Their massive rollout between 2020 and 2022 drove demand for maritime Super Freezers, a segment in which cooling unit manufacturer Ingersoll Rand is the global reference.

Outside of vaccines, applications remain limited: scientific research biobanks, biotechnological active ingredients, proteins, peptides, heat-sensitive hormones, or even high-end sashimi kept at −60°C for optimal gastronomic quality.

      Applications

Preserving at −70°C with a 40 ft HC Super Freezer

The 40 ft HC Super Freezer is sized for the most demanding extreme cold-chain transport and storage.

The points below give the essential benchmarks for interpreting this section. Each item specifies the practical benefit and the usage condition to keep in mind.

      • mRNA vaccines

Transport and storage at −70°C or −50°C depending on the manufacturer's protocol, for vaccination campaigns.

      • Cryogenic biological samples

DNA, RNA, stem cells, human and animal tissue, biobanks requiring −70°C to −80°C for long-term preservation.

      • Ultra-sensitive pharmaceutical batches

Proteins, peptides, hormones and monoclonal antibodies requiring an extreme cold chain compliant with good distribution practice.

      • High-end sashimi and ultra-fresh products

Cellular preservation at −60°C for top-level gastronomic quality; bluefin tuna, sashimi-grade salmon, Japanese exports.

      Highlights

Why buy a used 40 ft Reefer Super Freezer container

The Super Freezer crosses a barrier that no standard Reefer can: going down to −70°C, where ordinary units stop at −25°C. The strengths below explain the technical choices that make this extreme range possible and reliable; specialized cooling unit, reinforced insulation, air circulation.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Ultra-low range down to −70°C

This is the only configuration capable of transporting and storing mRNA vaccines, which degrade beyond −60°C. No standard Reefer reaches this level of cold.

      • Ingersoll Rand-manufactured cooling unit

This is the global reference for maritime Super Freezers, proven at scale during pandemic vaccine rollouts. A technology validated by the most demanding use.

      • Reinforced polyurethane insulation

At extreme temperatures, the difference with the outside exceeds 90°C. Reinforced insulation minimizes heat loss, which maintains −70°C with controlled energy consumption.

      • T-bar rail floor

The rails provide an air passage under the cargo. At −70°C, this uniform circulation avoids any hot spot that would compromise a sensitive cryogenic batch.

      • Managed maintenance

A dedicated maintenance contract, specialized refrigerant gases, very low temperature components, can be taken out at purchase. This cutting-edge equipment requires specific monitoring.

      • Fast, critical repair

On irreplaceable cryogenic products, immediate intervention is vital. Rapid repair limits any thermal drift before it destroys the cargo.

      • Regulatory compliance

Special very-low-temperature ATP/CAT-S and pharmaceutical GDP are combined, with the complete traceability required for temperature-sensitive medicines.

      Applications

What is the price of a used 40 ft Reefer Super Freezer container

The 40 ft HC Super Freezer is a very small production product. Its price reflects the extreme specialization of the Ingersoll Rand-manufactured cooling unit, the reinforced polyurethane insulation and the rarity of the segment.

      Four factors drive price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability and delivery costs.

      • Cryogenic pharmaceutical and biotechnological demand

MRNA vaccine rollouts, research biobanks, ultra-sensitive pharmaceutical batches; a slow-growing but high-value niche.

      • Cost of the very-low-temperature cooling unit and reinforced insulation

High-capacity components, specialized refrigerant gas and multi-layer polyurethane insulation.

      • Pharmaceutical logistics pressure

The Super Freezer segment is very limited and sensitive to demand spikes as well as production disruptions.

      • Downstream costs

Refrigerated road transport with a reinforced genset, pharmaceutical customs formalities and secure escort depending on the value of the load.
