      Reefer ; Refrigerated Container

      What is a Reefer container?

A Reefer container — short for refrigerated — is an active refrigerated unit. Unlike an ordinary transport box, it carries an integrated refrigeration unit made by a leading manufacturer (Carrier, Thermoking, Daikin) that continuously produces and regulates cold. The set-point temperature is held between −25 °C and +25 °C, regardless of outside conditions.

This is what fundamentally distinguishes the Reefer from an isothermal container. An isothermal container is passive: its insulated walls merely slow heat exchange without ever producing cold; the temperature always drifts in the end. The Reefer, by contrast, is active: it actively compensates for heat ingress and maintains the set point for as long as it is supplied with electricity.

This active regulation makes the Reefer the benchmark for maritime transport under cold chain. Frozen goods, fresh produce, cut flowers, vaccines and medicines, fine wines: all cargo whose quality depends on a stable temperature travels in a Reefer. The container continuously logs the temperature, making it possible to prove on arrival that the cold chain was never broken.

      • Active refrigeration unit

The integrated unit regulates temperature between −25 °C and +25 °C to within a degree. Electronic monitoring continuously records the set point — proof that the cold chain was maintained from start to finish of the transit.
      • Three-phase power supply

The refrigeration unit connects to a 380-460 V three-phase supply — at the terminal, aboard the vessel, or via a standalone generator set (genset). As long as it is powered, the Reefer holds its set point without interruption.
      • T-rail floor

The floor is made up of T-shaped rails that create an air passage beneath the cargo. Cold air circulates all around the load, ensuring a uniform temperature — no hot spots — at every level of the stack.
      • ATP compliance

The ATP Agreement governs the transport of perishable goods across Europe. ATP compliance certifies that the container meets the thermal performance requirements set by regulation for chilled and frozen goods.

      In detail

What is a used 40 ft Reefer 4-Engine container?

A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: an integrated cooling unit generates and maintains a chosen temperature, from −25°C to +25°C. The Reefer 4-Engine is a configuration specific to the National Conteneur catalog: a 9'6" High Cube casing, raised by about 30 cm, equipped not with one but with four redundant cooling units.

This redundancy provides operational safety. If one or two engines fail, the others automatically take over: thermal regulation is maintained without interruption until maintenance can intervene. The cooling units are compatible with refrigeration equipment suppliers, cooling unit manufacturer or manufacturer-fitted cooling unit.

The general market does not recognize the Reefer 4-Engine as a standard product. It's a specialization for critical shipments where interruption of the cold chain is unacceptable: irreplaceable pharmaceutical batches, unique scientific samples, long-duration missions, offshore platforms.

For a Used version, National Conteneur uses this technical base as a reference, then qualifies each unit according to its actual condition: structure, weatherproofing, doors, floor, markings, documents and equipment specific to the product family. The technical information therefore remains that of the model, while cosmetic condition, availability and certificates depend on the batch offered.

      In detail

      Understanding 4-engine redundancy

Almost all commercial maritime Reefers carry only a single cooling unit. If that engine fails, the cold chain is interrupted immediately. For most everyday food and pharmaceutical flows, this risk remains acceptable: maintenance can respond quickly, at a port or depot.

For flows where interruption is unacceptable, the four-engine configuration changes the equation. The failure of one engine triggers an automatic switchover to the other three, with no break in the −25/+25°C regulation. The failure of two engines still leaves two units in service, in degraded mode. Maintenance can then wait until the next port, without ever stopping the cooling.

      Applications

Preserving the critical cold chain with a Reefer 4-Engine

This configuration is for flows where a thermal interruption results in an irreversible commercial or scientific loss.

The points below give the essential benchmarks for interpreting this section. Each item specifies the practical benefit and the usage condition to keep in mind.

      • Irreplaceable pharmaceuticals

Biotech batches with no backup solution, sensitive active ingredients, unique monoclonal antibodies, biological formulations in transit.

      • Scientific batches and long-duration missions

Biobank samples, research cultures, extended polar or maritime missions with limited port access.

      • Offshore platforms

Shipments to sites where maintenance response is delayed by difficult access; offshore food supply, oil platforms, offshore wind farms.

      • Very high-value food exports

Batches where a break in the cold chain means a total loss; caviar, premium foie gras, high-end sashimi.

      Highlights

Why buy a used 40 ft Reefer 4-Engine container

The Reefer 4-Engine solves a specific problem: the single cooling unit failure that threatens any standard Reefer. The strengths below explain how four-engine redundancy eliminates this risk and why this configuration is exclusively for shipments where a cooling interruption is unacceptable.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Four redundant cooling units

Where a standard Reefer relies entirely on a single engine, this configuration carries four. This is an operational safeguard designed for critical shipments where a thermal interruption is unacceptable.

      • Fault tolerance

One or two engines can go out of service without a cooling cutoff. The switchover to the remaining units is automatic; the −25/+25°C regulation never stops.

      • Configuration in the National Conteneur catalog

This is not a standard market product, but a very limited-production configuration, specialized for critical shipments. Few manufacturers offer it.

      • Maintenance without stopping the cooling

Replacing a failed engine does not interrupt the regulation, which is maintained by the other three. Maintenance can wait until the next port, without ever exposing the cargo.

      • Compatible cooling units

The four units are compatible with refrigeration equipment suppliers, cooling unit manufacturer or manufacturer-fitted cooling unit depending on the configuration chosen. The equipment aligns with maintenance standards already in place.

      • Regulatory compliance

ATP/CAT-S, ISO 6346, CSC, multi-engine PTI and GDP are all combined. This set covers the requirements for transporting critical batches, pharmaceuticals included.

      Applications

What is the price of a used 40 ft Reefer 4-Engine container

The 40 ft HC Reefer 4-Engine is a very small production product. Its price reflects an extreme configuration, four redundant cooling units and automatic switchover engineering, and the rarity of the segment.

      Four factors drive price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability and delivery costs.

      • Demand for critical refrigerated transport

Irreplaceable pharmaceuticals, unique scientific batches, long-duration missions, offshore platforms; narrow but recurring niches.

      • Cost of the four cooling units and redundancy engineering

Four units from refrigeration equipment suppliers, cooling unit manufacturer or manufacturer-fitted cooling unit, a unified control panel and automatic switchover engineering.

      • Refrigerated logistics pressure

The Reefer 4-Engine segment is very limited; few specialized manufacturers produce this configuration.

      • Downstream costs

Refrigerated road transport with genset or truck power connection, pharmaceutical customs formalities and secure escort depending on the value of the load.
