      Reefer ; Refrigerated Container

      What is a Reefer container?

A Reefer container — short for refrigerated — is an active refrigerated unit. Unlike an ordinary transport box, it carries an integrated refrigeration unit made by a leading manufacturer (Carrier, Thermoking, Daikin) that continuously produces and regulates cold. The set-point temperature is held between −25 °C and +25 °C, regardless of outside conditions.

This is what fundamentally distinguishes the Reefer from an isothermal container. An isothermal container is passive: its insulated walls merely slow heat exchange without ever producing cold; the temperature always drifts in the end. The Reefer, by contrast, is active: it actively compensates for heat ingress and maintains the set point for as long as it is supplied with electricity.

This active regulation makes the Reefer the benchmark for maritime transport under cold chain. Frozen goods, fresh produce, cut flowers, vaccines and medicines, fine wines: all cargo whose quality depends on a stable temperature travels in a Reefer. The container continuously logs the temperature, making it possible to prove on arrival that the cold chain was never broken.

      • Active refrigeration unit

The integrated unit regulates temperature between −25 °C and +25 °C to within a degree. Electronic monitoring continuously records the set point — proof that the cold chain was maintained from start to finish of the transit.
      • Three-phase power supply

The refrigeration unit connects to a 380-460 V three-phase supply — at the terminal, aboard the vessel, or via a standalone generator set (genset). As long as it is powered, the Reefer holds its set point without interruption.
      • T-rail floor

The floor is made up of T-shaped rails that create an air passage beneath the cargo. Cold air circulates all around the load, ensuring a uniform temperature — no hot spots — at every level of the stack.
      • ATP compliance

The ATP Agreement governs the transport of perishable goods across Europe. ATP compliance certifies that the container meets the thermal performance requirements set by regulation for chilled and frozen goods.

      In detail

What is a first-trip 40 ft Reefer 4-motor shipping container?

A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: a built-in refrigeration unit produces and maintains a chosen temperature, from −25 °C to +25 °C. The 4-motor Reefer is a configuration specific to the National Conteneur catalog: a 9'6" High Cube box, raised about 30 cm, fitted not with one, but with four redundant refrigeration units.

This redundancy provides operational safety. If one or two motors fail, the others automatically take over: thermal regulation continues uninterrupted until maintenance can intervene. The refrigeration units are compatible with a refrigeration equipment manufacturer, a refrigeration unit manufacturer or a refrigeration unit manufacturer.

The general market does not recognize the 4-motor Reefer as a standard product. It's a specialty for critical transport where a break in the cold chain is unacceptable: irreplaceable pharmaceutical batches, unique scientific samples, long-duration missions, offshore platforms.

      In detail

      Understanding 4-motor redundancy

Nearly all commercial maritime Reefers carry only a single refrigeration unit. If this motor fails, the cold chain breaks immediately. For most common food and pharmaceutical flows, this risk remains acceptable: maintenance can respond quickly, at port or at the depot.

For flows where an interruption is unacceptable, the four-motor configuration changes the equation. A motor failure triggers an automatic switch to the other three, with no break in −25/+25 °C regulation. The failure of two motors still leaves two units in service, in a degraded mode. Maintenance can then wait until the next port, without ever stopping the cold.

      Applications

Preserving critical cold chains with a 4-motor Reefer

This configuration is aimed at flows where a thermal interruption causes an irreversible commercial or scientific loss.

The points below give the key reference points for interpreting this section. Each item specifies the practical benefit and the condition of use to remember.

      • Irreplaceable pharmaceuticals

Biotech batches with no fallback, sensitive active ingredients, unique monoclonal antibodies, biological formulations in transit.

      • Scientific batches and long-duration missions

Biobank samples, research cultures, extended polar or maritime missions with limited port access.

      • Offshore platforms

Transport to sites where maintenance is delayed by difficult access; offshore food supply, oil platforms, offshore wind farms.

      • Very high-value food exports

Batches where a break in the cold chain means total loss; caviar, grand cru foie gras, high-end sashimi.

      Highlights

Why buy a first-trip 40 ft Reefer 4-motor shipping container

The 4-motor Reefer solves a specific problem: the single refrigeration unit failure that threatens every classic Reefer. The strengths below explain how four-motor redundancy eliminates this risk and why this configuration is aimed exclusively at transport where a break in the cold chain is unacceptable.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Four redundant refrigeration units

Where a standard Reefer relies entirely on a single motor, this configuration carries four. It's an operational safety feature designed for critical transport where a thermal interruption is unacceptable.

      • Failure tolerance

One or two motors can go out of service with no break in cold. The switch to the remaining units is automatic; −25/+25 °C regulation never stops.

      • Configuration in the National Conteneur catalog

This is not a standard market product, but a very limited-production configuration, specialized for critical transport. Few manufacturers offer it.

      • Maintenance with no cold interruption

Replacing a failed motor does not interrupt regulation, which is maintained by the other three. Maintenance can wait until the next port, never exposing the goods.

      • Compatible refrigeration units

The four units are compatible with a refrigeration equipment manufacturer, a refrigeration unit manufacturer or a refrigeration unit manufacturer depending on the configuration chosen. The equipment aligns with maintenance standards already in place.

      • Regulated compliance

ATP/CAT-S, ISO 6346, CSC, multi-motor PTI and GDP are all in place. This set covers the requirements for transporting critical batches, pharmaceuticals included.

      Applications

What is the price of a first-trip 40 ft Reefer 4-motor shipping container

The 40 ft HC 4-motor Reefer is a very low-volume product. Its price reflects an extreme configuration, four redundant refrigeration units and automatic switchover engineering, and the rarity of the segment.

      Four factors drive price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.

      • Critical refrigerated transport demand

Irreplaceable pharmaceuticals, unique scientific batches, long-duration missions, offshore platforms; narrow but recurring niches.

      • Cost of the four refrigeration units and redundancy engineering

Four units from a refrigeration equipment manufacturer, a refrigeration unit manufacturer or a refrigeration unit manufacturer, a unified control panel and automatic switchover engineering.

      • Refrigerated logistics bottlenecks

The 4-motor Reefer segment is very limited; few specialized manufacturers produce this configuration.

      • Downstream costs

Refrigerated road transport with a genset or truck power point, pharmaceutical customs formalities and secure escort depending on the value of the load.
