      Reefer High Cube

What is a Reefer High Cube?

The Reefer High Cube combines two features in a single container: the active refrigeration of a Reefer and the extra height of a High Cube. Like any Reefer, it carries an integrated refrigeration unit that regulates temperature between −25 °C and +25 °C. Like any High Cube, it stands approximately 30 cm taller — 2.896 m overall height versus 2.591 m for a standard size.

This combination addresses a concrete logistics problem in cold chain operations. A standard Reefer limits the loading height; for bulky, lightweight goods under temperature control, the container ceiling is reached well before the weight limit. The extra 30 cm of the High Cube recover this lost volume without changing the floor footprint or the handling profile.

The Reefer High Cube is therefore the standard format for tall palletised loads under cold chain: packaged frozen goods, cut flowers, fruit and vegetables in stacked cartons. The interior height of nearly 2.50 m allows two-level palletising, which significantly reduces the cost of transport per refrigerated cubic metre.

      • Increased refrigerated volume

Approximately 30 cm more usable height than a standard Reefer, with the same floor footprint. The extra volume directly benefits tall, bulky, lightweight cargo transported under temperature control.
      • Active regulated refrigeration

The integrated refrigeration unit, Carrier or Thermoking, actively produces and maintains temperature across the full range from −25 °C to +25 °C. It continuously compensates for heat ingress, with no thermal drift.
      • High-level palletising

The interior height allows pallets to be stacked two levels high under cold chain. The cost of transport per refrigerated cubic metre drops accordingly, without breaking the set point.
      • Maritime standard

Despite its extra height, the Reefer HC remains compatible with Reefer terminals and container shipping fleets worldwide. It is secured and powered exactly like a standard Reefer, everywhere.

      In detail

What is a used 40 ft Reefer High Cube shipping container?

A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: a built-in refrigeration unit produces and maintains a chosen temperature. On this large format, the range is extended, from −40 °C to +30 °C, versus −25 °C to +25 °C on shorter Reefers. "High Cube", or HC, refers to a format raised about 30 cm. "Used" means the unit has already been in service, then reconditioned at the depot.

The box is made of fully welded Corten steel, a steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, with a stainless steel interior finish. The refrigeration unit, compatible with a refrigeration unit manufacturer, a refrigeration equipment manufacturer or a refrigeration equipment manufacturer, is tested at the depot; insulation is checked and the aluminum T-rail floor cleaned.

12.19 m long and 2.89 m tall, this format offers 67.9 m³ usable for a 29,300 kg allowed load. The combination of large volume and an extended thermal range makes it suited to trans-continental exports and high-density storage. A few surface marks of use affect neither regulation nor compliance.

      In detail

How do you power a Reefer container?

Unlike an insulated container, which only slows heat exchange, a Reefer actively produces cold. It therefore needs a constant power supply.

The refrigeration unit plugs into a 380-460 V three-phase supply, via a 32 A industrial socket. At a quay or in a warehouse, connection is made to the mains. In transit or on an isolated site, a generator, the "genset", takes over. Planning for this power supply is essential: without electricity, the cold chain is broken.

      Applications

Keeping your goods at the right temperature

Reconditioned, this 40 ft HC covers large-scale refrigerated operations, where budget matters as much as usable volume.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Large-volume export on a controlled budget

Large frozen or pharmaceutical batches at −18 °C or between 2 °C and 8 °C.

      • Fixed industrial refrigerated storage

Cold room extension for producers or hubs, at −25 °C or +4 °C depending on production.

      • International food

Chocolate-making at volume, aged cheeses, cured meats and meat preparations exported in full loads.

      • Chemistry and thermal industry

Compounds or technical products regulated between −10 °C and +5 °C over European and intercontinental distances.

      Highlights

Why buy a used 40 ft Reefer High Cube shipping container

The used 40 ft Reefer High Cube gives access to the largest refrigerated volume and the extended −40 °C/+30 °C thermal range, at a controlled cost. The strengths below show how reconditioning secures the large-format refrigeration unit and why a well-tested unit delivers the reliability of new.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Best volume/price ratio

67.9 m³ usable, the largest refrigerated volume in the segment, on a significantly reduced budget compared to new. Ideal for large-volume exports.

      • Extended thermal range preserved

The −40 °C to +30 °C range is maintained after a full refrigeration unit overhaul. Deep-freeze capacity is not degraded by reconditioning.

      • Performance tested at the depot

A controlled cooling test and a watertightness test by water spraying are carried out before every delivery. Actual thermal performance is checked, not assumed.

      • Managed maintenance

An annual preventive maintenance contract can be taken out to preserve the unit's lifespan. This follow-up is what secures a used refrigeration unit over the long term.

      • Fast repairs

Refrigeration technicians step in in case of an anomaly on the large-format refrigeration circuit. On a Reefer, an unaddressed failure directly compromises the goods.

      • Re-validated compliance

The ATP/CAT-S and CSC plates are reissued and Cargo Worthy status is granted after inspection by an accredited body. The unit remains fit for maritime and regulated transport.

      Options available on request

The following options can be added to Used and First-trip versions depending on availability and specifications: PVC strip curtain, LED light pack, person-trapped-inside alarm, 1/3 - 2/3 door with easy-open handle, anti-panic interior opening mechanism, automatic humidity control, flat floor.

      Applications

What is the price of a used 40 ft Reefer High Cube shipping container

The used 40 ft Reefer HC follows a limited secondary market, less liquid than that of the 20 ft and more sensitive to trans-continental export cycles.

      Four factors drive price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.

      • Refrigerated shipping demand

40 ft HC units remain concentrated on a few long-haul routes, which limits volumes reaching the secondary market.

      • Refrigeration unit and refrigerant gas cost

On an extended-range Reefer (−40 °C/+30 °C), overhauling the refrigeration unit manufacturer's, refrigeration equipment manufacturer's or refrigeration equipment manufacturer's unit represents a major share of the price.

      • Logistics bottlenecks

A port blockage in Asia or the United States can dry up the arrival of used 40 ft HC units in Europe for several months.

      • Downstream costs

Road transport of a 40 ft Reefer requires a specific convoy with a genset or connection, which weighs on the delivered price.
