      Reefer High Cube

What is a Reefer High Cube?

The Reefer High Cube combines two features in a single container: the active refrigeration of a Reefer and the extra height of a High Cube. Like any Reefer, it carries an integrated refrigeration unit that regulates temperature between −25 °C and +25 °C. Like any High Cube, it stands approximately 30 cm taller — 2.896 m overall height versus 2.591 m for a standard size.

This combination addresses a concrete logistics problem in cold chain operations. A standard Reefer limits the loading height; for bulky, lightweight goods under temperature control, the container ceiling is reached well before the weight limit. The extra 30 cm of the High Cube recover this lost volume without changing the floor footprint or the handling profile.

The Reefer High Cube is therefore the standard format for tall palletised loads under cold chain: packaged frozen goods, cut flowers, fruit and vegetables in stacked cartons. The interior height of nearly 2.50 m allows two-level palletising, which significantly reduces the cost of transport per refrigerated cubic metre.

      • Increased refrigerated volume

Approximately 30 cm more usable height than a standard Reefer, with the same floor footprint. The extra volume directly benefits tall, bulky, lightweight cargo transported under temperature control.
      • Active regulated refrigeration

The integrated refrigeration unit, Carrier or Thermoking, actively produces and maintains temperature across the full range from −25 °C to +25 °C. It continuously compensates for heat ingress, with no thermal drift.
      • High-level palletising

The interior height allows pallets to be stacked two levels high under cold chain. The cost of transport per refrigerated cubic metre drops accordingly, without breaking the set point.
      • Maritime standard

Despite its extra height, the Reefer HC remains compatible with Reefer terminals and container shipping fleets worldwide. It is secured and powered exactly like a standard Reefer, everywhere.

      In detail

What is a first-trip 20 ft Reefer High Cube shipping container?

A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: a built-in refrigeration unit produces and maintains a chosen temperature, adjustable from −25 °C to +25 °C. "High Cube", or HC, refers to a format raised about 30 cm above the standard; 2.89 m external height, 2.69 m internal. "First-trip" (also called one-trip) means it is a new unit, straight from the factory after a single trip.

The box is made of fully welded Corten steel, a steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, with a stainless steel interior finish. The insulation, 7 cm polyurethane foam, wraps the entire box. The industrial refrigeration unit is new, compatible with a refrigeration equipment manufacturer or a refrigeration equipment manufacturer.

With 32.2 m³ usable, this format offers nearly 4 m³ more than a standard 20 ft Reefer, for the same length. The internal height allows two-level palletization. The 27,470 kg allowed load enables full loads with no weight constraint.

      In detail

How do you power a Reefer container?

Unlike an insulated container, which only slows heat exchange, a Reefer actively produces cold. It therefore needs a constant power supply.

The refrigeration unit plugs into a 380-460 V three-phase supply, via a 32 A industrial socket. At a quay or in a warehouse, connection is made to the mains. In transit or on an isolated site, a generator, the "genset", takes over. Planning for this power supply is essential: without electricity, the cold chain is broken.

      Applications

Keeping your goods at the right temperature

The HC height and the new refrigeration unit's autonomy expand loading possibilities, especially for sectors where tiered palletization is central.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Large-volume cold distribution

Fresh products palletized on two levels, between 0 °C and 4 °C, delivered on tight schedules to purchasing hubs.

      • Industrial-volume pharmaceuticals

Preparations between 2 °C and 8 °C, transported in full batches to European hospital hubs.

      • High-end frozen food chain

Meat, ice cream or ready meals at −18 °C, palletized vertically to maximize the temperature/volume ratio.

      • High-end cosmetics

Creams, serums and luxury packaging between 8 °C and 18 °C, sensitive to variations over long distances.

      Highlights

Why buy a first-trip 20 ft Reefer High Cube shipping container

The new 20 ft Reefer High Cube maximizes refrigerated volume on the pivotal format of cold logistics. The strengths below explain what HC height changes for palletization and what new condition guarantees on the refrigeration unit; the deciding element of a Reefer.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Maximum HC refrigerated volume

32.2 m³ usable, nearly 4 m³ more than a standard 20 ft Reefer, for the same length. The gain comes entirely from the increased height.

      • Two-level palletization

The internal height is enough to stack Euro pallets on two levels within the cold chain. This double layer cuts transport cost per refrigerated cubic meter.

      • New refrigeration unit under warranty

The refrigeration equipment manufacturer's unit is original, under a manufacturer's warranty transferable to the buyer. The warranty covers the most expensive and most critical element of the Reefer.

      • Managed maintenance

An annual preventive maintenance contract, refrigerant gas, components, exchangers, can be taken out at order. It preserves the unit's performance over time.

      • Fast repairs

Refrigeration technicians step in in case of an incident to limit any break in the cold chain. On a Reefer, an unaddressed failure directly compromises the goods.

      • Customizable

Removable partitions, strip curtains or temperature alarms can be added as options. The unit adapts precisely to the goods being transported.

      In detail

      Options available on request

The following options can be added to Used and First-trip versions depending on availability and specifications: PVC strip curtain, LED light pack, person-trapped-inside alarm, 1/3 - 2/3 door with easy-open handle, anti-panic interior opening mechanism, automatic humidity control, flat floor.

      Applications

What is the price of a first-trip 20 ft Reefer High Cube shipping container

The new 20 ft Reefer HC belongs to a specialized market, where the refrigeration unit's value weighs more than that of the steel.

      Four factors drive price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.

      • Refrigerated shipping demand

HC height is favored on large-volume pharmaceutical and fresh product flows; when activity rises, supply shrinks.

      • Refrigeration unit and refrigerant gas cost

A new refrigeration equipment manufacturer's unit represents a major share of the price. Electronic component prices and refrigerant gas prices, the "F-gases", such as R134a or R452A, pass directly through to it.

      • Logistics bottlenecks

A pandemic, a port closure or geopolitical tension on shipping routes tightens Reefer supply within days.

      • Downstream costs

Refrigerated road transport, connection to a genset or truck power point, specialized handling and health certificates add to the factory price.
