      Open Top ; Opening roof

What is an Open Top container?

An Open Top container — literally an open roof — differs from a standard container in one decisive detail: it has no rigid roof. In its place, a removable tarpaulin stretched over demountable bows closes the box. The roof is therefore not a fixed panel but a reclosable opening.

This design addresses a problem that rear doors cannot solve. A machine tool, a block of stone, a steel coil may be too tall or too heavy to be introduced through the rear. The Open Top works around this: the tarpaulin and bows are removed, and the load is lowered vertically by crane or overhead crane directly into the box.

A second element reinforces this access: the upper header bar at the rear is also demountable. For cargo taller than the container itself, it is removed and the load can then exceed the standard gauge — an over-height out-of-gauge load that no closed container allows.

      • Top loading

Cargo is lowered vertically by crane or overhead crane directly into the open box. This is the only way to introduce a load that is too tall or too heavy for the rear doors.
      • Removable tarpaulin

The roof is a soft tarpaulin stretched over removable bows, not a rigid panel. It is removed to allow vertical access, then re-tensioned to protect the cargo during transport.
      • Unrestricted height

The upper rear header bar is demountable. Cargo taller than the container can then exceed the standard gauge — an out-of-gauge load that no closed container allows.
      • Industrial cargo

Machine tools, stone blocks, steel coils, heavy equipment: the Open Top accommodates industrial loads that cannot be introduced through the rear doors of a standard container.

      In detail

What is a 40ft used Open Top container?

An Open Top container is a container with an opening roof: its top section is removed to load goods from above, by crane. "Used" means the unit has already been through several service cycles, then reconditioned; inspected and refurbished at the depot. The 40ft format is the long format in the range.

The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, retains its original reinforced structure. The polyester tarpaulin and removable bows are inspected or replaced at the depot depending on condition. The 28 mm marine plywood floor withstands heavy rolling loads.

The 40ft format offers 66 m³ of usable volume over 28.28 m² of floor space, with rear doors opening at 270°. At a lower cost than new, it is a proven solution for transporting long out-of-gauge goods, in the naval, rail, forestry and energy sectors.

      In detail

Open Top: what is an opening roof for?

A standard container is loaded only through its rear doors. Any goods taller than these doors, beam, machine, tank, become "out of gauge," or OOG: they do not fit. This is the problem the Open Top solves.

Its roof is not a fixed steel sheet. It consists of removable metal bows and a polyester tarpaulin tensioned by straps. Both are removed, and the body opens completely from the top. A crane, an overhead crane or a hoist can then lower the load directly in, without cutting it up or passing it through the doors.

      Applications

Uses for a 40ft used Open Top container

Reconditioned, this long format covers large-length out-of-gauge logistics, at a reduced acquisition cost.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Industrial decommissioning

Welded structure sections, end-of-life heavy equipment, long scrap metal batches, decommissioned production parts.

      • Oil and gas industry

Prefabricated pipeline sections, compact drilling equipment, instrumentation modules, packaged site equipment.

      • Modular construction

Removable prefabricated modules, timber frames, industrial building sections, temporary shelter structures.

      • Mines and quarries

Compact extraction equipment, conveyor belt sections, bulk raw material batches with quick coverage.

      Highlights

Why buy a 40ft used Open Top container

The used 40ft Open Top offers the long format for top loading at a reduced cost. The strengths below show what the depot inspection guarantees, including the tarpaulin and structure, and why this large format remains ideal for long out-of-gauge pieces.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Affordable price

Used represents a net saving compared with new 40ft, with no loss of the opening-roof function. The budget difference carries over to the project.

      • Long format

66 m³ usable provide the maximum capacity in the segment for transporting long out-of-gauge pieces; profiles, elongated machines, structures.

      • Body inspected at the depot

The welded 40ft structure is checked, the marine plywood floor inspected and sealing checked. The unit is refurbished before being put back into service.

      • Tarpaulin and bows inspected

The tarpaulin and bows are checked and replaced if degraded, then the straps are verified. The opening roof regains its full function.

      • Sustainable approach

Extending the life of an existing 40ft body avoids manufacturing a new unit. On a large format, the steel saved is even more significant.

      • Re-validated compliance

ISO 6346 marking and the CSC plate are reissued after inspection; the Cargo Worthy rating remains possible for maritime use.

      Applications

What is the price of a 40ft used Open Top container

The used 40ft Open Top follows an active secondary market. Availability depends on the arrival of reconditioned 40ft opening-roof units.

      Four factors influence price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the price of the product, availability and delivery costs.

      • Demand for long out-of-gauge transport

Strong in decommissioning, mining, gas and modular construction segments, which favor the used 40ft.

      • Cost of Corten steel and the tarpaulin

The body's materials and the replacement of the large-format tarpaulin at the depot weigh on the quote.

      • Shipping logistics pressures

Reconditioned 40ft Open Top supply depends on port arrivals and downstream industrial cycles.

      • Downstream costs

Standard 40ft road transport and heavy crane handling for out-of-gauge loading.
