What is a 20ft first-trip Open Top container?
An Open Top container is a container with an opening roof: its top section is removed to load goods from above, by crane. "First-trip" means it is a new unit, out of the factory after a single positioning journey. The 20ft format is the mid-size format in the range.
The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded. The roof consists of removable metal bows and a reinforced polyester tarpaulin tensioned by straps. The 28 mm marine plywood floor withstands heavy loads.
The 20ft format offers 33 m³ of usable volume over 14 m² of floor space, with a door opening of 2.34 m × 2.28 m and rear doors opening at 270°. It is the benchmark for transporting beams, construction machinery, bulk batches and long materials, in construction as well as industry.
In detail
Open Top: what is an opening roof for?
A standard container is loaded only through its rear doors. Any goods taller than these doors, beam, machine, tank, become "out of gauge," or OOG: they do not fit. This is the problem the Open Top solves.
Its roof is not a fixed steel sheet. It consists of removable metal bows and a polyester tarpaulin tensioned by straps. Both are removed, and the body opens completely from the top. A crane, an overhead crane or a hoist can then lower the load directly in, without cutting it up or passing it through the doors.
Applications
Uses for a 20ft first-trip Open Top container
Top loading provides full crane access and avoids the costly cutting up of long or bulky pieces.
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a 20ft first-trip Open Top container
The new 20ft Open Top is the mid-size format for top loading. The strengths below explain what each element of the opening roof concretely brings, tarpaulin, bows, dual access, and why this configuration accommodates loads that no closed container can receive.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Top loading
Access is via crane, overhead crane or hoist, for out-of-gauge goods in terms of height. It is the only way in for a load too tall or too heavy for the doors.
-
New opening roof
The reinforced polyester tarpaulin is tensioned by straps and comes off quickly. Once removed, it frees full vertical access to the body; retensioned, it protects the cargo.
-
Removable bows
The support bows come off independently of the tarpaulin. This modularity allows the roof to be partially opened or fully cleared depending on the load being handled.
-
Doors opening at 270°
The double rear doors offer standard flush access, complementing top loading. The entry route is chosen according to the goods.
-
Welded Corten body
The self-weathering steel structure guarantees maritime robustness. The container complies with ISO 6346 and CSC for multimodal transport with no adaptation.
-
Mid-size format
The 20ft gauge is compatible with the European road fleet and all maritime terminals. It offers the right balance between capacity and maneuverability.
Applications
What is the price of a 20ft first-trip Open Top container
The new 20ft Open Top belongs to a niche segment of the shipping trade. Its price depends on the limited availability of opening-roof units and the manufacturing cycles of reinforced tarpaulins.
Four factors influence price variations:
The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the price of the product, availability and delivery costs.
