What is a new 40ft Open Top HC shipping container?
An Open Top container is a container with an opening roof: its upper section is removed to load cargo from above, by crane. The "HC" designation, for High Cube, refers to a raised format about 30 cm taller than the standard. "First-trip" means it is a new unit, straight from the factory after a single positioning journey. It is the maximum format in the range.
The box, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded, in a reinforced HC structure. The reinforced polyester tarpaulin rests on removable metal bows spread along the full length. This HC variant has a movable header: the crossbar above the rear doors pivots, allowing tall parts to be loaded through the back without removing the roof.
The 40ft HC format frees up 74.5 m³ of usable volume, 8.5 m³ more than a standard 40ft Open Top, for 26,480 kg of allowable payload. Its interior height of 2.65 m, combined with its length of 12.19 m, accommodates out-of-gauge parts that are both long and tall.
In detail
Open Top: what is an opening roof for?
A standard container can only be loaded through its rear doors. Any cargo taller than these doors, beam, machine, tank, becomes "out-of-gauge," or OOG: it doesn't fit. That is the problem the Open Top solves.
Its roof is not a fixed sheet. It consists of removable metal bows and a polyester tarpaulin tensioned by straps. Remove both, and the box opens completely from the top. A crane, an overhead crane, or a hoist can then lower the load directly, without cutting it or feeding it through the doors.
Applications
Uses of a new 40ft Open Top HC shipping container
This format is dedicated to out-of-gauge cargo that combines great length with extra height.
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use case connects the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a new 40ft Open Top HC shipping container
The new 40ft Open Top HC is the ultimate out-of-gauge format: it combines 40ft length, High Cube height, opening roof, and movable header. The strengths below explain what this combination brings to the longest and tallest parts.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Maximum long and tall format
12.19 m long by 2.65 m of interior height, for 74.5 m³ of usable volume. This is the maximum capacity for combined out-of-gauge cargo, length and height together.
-
Extra HC height
2.65 m of interior height, 30 cm more than a standard 40ft Open Top. This margin accommodates long vertical parts that the standard format cannot fit.
-
New opening roof
The roof can be quickly removed to provide full heavy-crane access along the entire length of the box. The load is lowered vertically, without constraint.
-
Movable header
The rear header pivots to let tall parts pass through the back, without having to remove the roof. It's a second, complementary out-of-gauge access route.
-
Welded HC Corten box
The structure is reinforced to withstand the combined length and height stress. It retains maximum marine-grade strength despite the openings.
-
ISO 6346 and CSC compliance
The unit is fit for multimodal transport. Its High Cube gauge requires checking bridge and tunnel heights on certain low routes.
Applications
What is the price of a new 40ft Open Top HC shipping container
The new 40ft Open Top HC combines three specific features, opening roof, movable header, and HC height on the long format, which place it in a niche segment of the out-of-gauge market.
