In detail
What is a 20ft first-trip Open Top HC container?
An Open Top container is a container with an opening roof: its top section is removed to load goods from above, by crane. "HC," for High Cube, refers to a format raised by about 30 cm compared with the standard. "First-trip" means it is a new unit, out of the factory after a single trip.
The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded. The reinforced polyester tarpaulin rests on removable metal bows. This HC variant has a movable header: the crossbar above the rear doors pivots, which allows tall pieces to be brought in through the rear without removing the roof.
The 20ft HC format offers 36.5 m³ of usable volume, 3.5 m³ more than a standard 20ft Open Top, for a 28,030 kg allowable load. Its interior height of 2.65 m accommodates out-of-gauge vertical pieces, loaded through the doors as well as the roof.
In detail
Open Top: what is an opening roof for?
A standard container is loaded only through its rear doors. Any goods taller than these doors, beam, machine, tank, become "out of gauge," or OOG: they do not fit. This is the problem the Open Top solves.
Its roof is not a fixed steel sheet. It consists of removable metal bows and a polyester tarpaulin tensioned by straps. Both are removed, and the body opens completely from the top. A crane, an overhead crane or a hoist can then lower the load directly in, without cutting it up or passing it through the doors.
Applications
Uses for a 20ft first-trip Open Top HC container
The HC format combines two loading modes: the removed roof for crane access, and the pivoting movable header for the rear doors.
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a 20ft first-trip Open Top HC container
The new 20ft Open Top HC combines two out-of-gauge accesses, the opening roof and the movable header, with the increased High Cube height. The strengths below explain what each feature brings and why this configuration accommodates the tallest vertical pieces.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Additional HC height
2.65 m of interior height, 30 cm more than a standard Open Top. This vertical margin accommodates tall pieces that the standard format cannot hold.
-
New opening roof
The bows and tarpaulin come off to free full access from above. The load is lowered vertically by crane, directly into the body.
-
Movable header
The rear header pivots to let tall pieces pass through the rear, with no need to remove the roof. It is a second, complementary out-of-gauge access route.
-
Compatible with crane, overhead crane and hoist
Standard vertical handling applies with no adaptation. The container loads on docks as well as on industrial sites.
-
Welded Corten body
The self-weathering steel structure withstands maritime conditions and repeated handling impacts. Robustness is not compromised by the openings.
-
ISO 6346 and CSC compliance
The unit is fit for multimodal transport. Its High Cube gauge, however, requires checking available heights on certain routes with low bridges.
Applications
What is the price of a 20ft first-trip Open Top HC container
The new 20ft Open Top HC combines three specifications, opening roof, movable header and HC height, which place it in a restricted niche segment of the out-of-gauge market.
