In detail
What is a 20ft used Open Top container?
An Open Top container is a container with an opening roof: its top section is removed to load goods from above, by crane. "Used" means the unit has already been through several service cycles, then reconditioned; inspected and refurbished at the depot. The 20ft format is the mid-size format in the range.
The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded. The roof consists of metal bows and a reinforced polyester tarpaulin, inspected or replaced at the depot depending on condition. The 28 mm marine plywood floor withstands heavy loads.
The 20ft format offers 33 m³ of usable volume over 14 m² of floor space, with rear doors opening at 270°. At a lower cost than new, it remains compatible with the European road fleet and maritime terminals, with no modification.
In detail
Open Top: what is an opening roof for?
A standard container is loaded only through its rear doors. Any goods taller than these doors, beam, machine, tank, become "out of gauge," or OOG: they do not fit. This is the problem the Open Top solves.
Its roof is not a fixed steel sheet. It consists of removable metal bows and a polyester tarpaulin tensioned by straps. Both are removed, and the body opens completely from the top. A crane, an overhead crane or a hoist can then lower the load directly in, without cutting it up or passing it through the doors.
Applications
Uses for a 20ft used Open Top container
Reconditioned, this mid-size format covers industrial flows where the opening-roof function remains necessary, without justifying a new investment.
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a 20ft used Open Top container
The used 20ft Open Top retains the opening-roof function, the asset that gives this format its value, at a reduced cost. The strengths below show what the depot inspection guarantees, including the tarpaulin and structure, and why surface patina changes nothing about industrial use.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Affordable price
Used represents a net saving compared with new, with no loss of the opening-roof function. It is the rational trade-off when the goal is vertical access, not aesthetics.
-
Body inspected at the depot
The welded structure is checked, the marine plywood floor inspected and sealing checked before delivery. The unit is refurbished, not sold as-is.
-
Tarpaulin and bows inspected
The tarpaulin and bows are checked and replaced if degraded, then the tension straps verified. The opening roof is made fully functional before being put back into service.
-
Loading by crane or overhead crane
Compatibility with standard vertical handling is preserved. The container receives its loads from above, on a dock as well as on an industrial site.
-
Sustainable approach
Extending the life of an existing body avoids manufacturing a new unit and saves several tonnes of steel; a concrete footprint-reduction argument.
-
Re-validated compliance
ISO 6346 marking and the CSC plate are reissued after inspection; the Cargo Worthy rating remains possible to retain maritime use.

What is the price of a 20ft used Open Top container
The used 20ft Open Top segment follows an active secondary market. Availability depends on the arrival of reconditioned opening-roof bodies.
Four factors influence price variations:
The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the price of the product, availability and delivery costs.
