In detail
What is a 40ft first-trip Open Top container?
An Open Top container is a container with an opening roof: its top section is removed to load goods from above, by crane. "First-trip" means it is a new unit, out of the factory after a single trip. The 40ft format is the long format in the range.
The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded, in a reinforced structure. The reinforced polyester tarpaulin rests on removable metal bows distributed along the full length. The 28 mm marine plywood floor withstands heavy rolling loads.
The 40ft format frees up 66 m³ of usable volume over 28.28 m² of floor space, for a 26,600 kg allowable load. It is the benchmark for transporting long, heavy pieces, in the forestry, energy, metallurgy and naval industries.
In detail
Open Top: what is an opening roof for?
A standard container is loaded only through its rear doors. Any goods taller than these doors, beam, machine, tank, become "out of gauge," or OOG: they do not fit. This is the problem the Open Top solves.
Its roof is not a fixed steel sheet. It consists of removable metal bows and a polyester tarpaulin tensioned by straps. Both are removed, and the body opens completely from the top. A crane, an overhead crane or a hoist can then lower the load directly in, without cutting it up or passing it through the doors.
Applications
Uses for a 40ft first-trip Open Top container
The long format avoids the costly cutting up of large pieces, loaded in one piece from above.
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a 40ft first-trip Open Top container
The new 40ft Open Top is the long format for top loading: it accommodates out-of-gauge pieces that their length excludes from shorter formats. The strengths below explain what each element of the opening roof brings on this large body.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Long format
66 m³ usable and 28.28 m² of floor space provide the maximum capacity in the segment. It is the format for long out-of-gauge pieces; profiles, structures, elongated machines.
-
Top loading
Access is via crane, overhead crane or hoist, for long, heavy out-of-gauge pieces. It is the only way in for a load the doors cannot receive.
-
New opening roof
The reinforced polyester tarpaulin is tensioned by straps and comes off quickly. Once removed, it frees full vertical access along the entire length of the body.
-
Removable bows
The support bows come off independently of the tarpaulin. This modularity allows the roof opening to be adapted to the piece being handled.
-
Doors opening at 270°
The double rear doors offer standard flush access, complementing top loading. The route is chosen according to the goods.
-
Welded Corten body
The self-weathering steel structure guarantees maritime robustness. The container complies with ISO 6346 and CSC for long-distance multimodal transport.
Applications
What is the price of a 40ft first-trip Open Top container
The new 40ft Open Top belongs to a specialized shipping segment. Its price depends on the limited availability of the long out-of-gauge segment and the production cycles of large-format tarpaulins.
Four factors influence price variations:
The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the price of the product, availability and delivery costs.
