A Reefer container is a refrigerated container: an integrated cooling unit generates and maintains a chosen temperature, from −25°C to +25°C. The term "Open Side" designates a main side opening: an entire side of the container opens, via double doors or panels. The Reefer Open Side combines both; a configuration specific to the National Conteneur catalog.

This side opening enables refrigerated cross-docking: pallet-by-pallet loading, directly from a logistics dock, without any maneuver via the rear. The general market usually separates Reefer and Open Side into two distinct ranges; their combination remains rare.
