Open Side ; Full lateral opening

What is an Open Side container?

An Open Side container is distinguished by one structural feature: one entire side opens up. Where a standard container offers only its rear doors, the Open Side opens the full length of its side via hinged swing panels or folding sections mounted on reinforced hinges.

This lateral opening transforms the loading logistics. A forklift can reach any position directly from the dock, without having to empty the container from front to back. On high-turnover flows, this time saving is decisive — it is the principle of cross-docking applied to the maritime container.

Beyond transport, the opening side makes the Open Side a sought-after conversion base: a trade stand, a showroom, a point of sale, or a workshop whose entire face opens in a single movement.

      • Fully opening side

The entire length of the container opens along one side. Access is no longer limited to the rear doors: every loading position becomes directly reachable without any intermediate manoeuvring.
      • Handling without dismantling

A forklift loads and unloads from the lateral dock without moving the other pallets. Cargo throughput speeds up and time spent stationary at the dock is reduced.
      • Long and bulky loads

Goods that cannot be introduced through the rear doors — long pieces, machinery, large-format furniture — enter at floor level from the side, without tilting or angle constraints.
      • Open-front conversion

The opening side serves as a shopfront: a trade stand, showroom, or point of sale where an entire face is exposed. A configuration only the Open Side makes possible on a container base.

      In detail

What is a 40ft used HC Open Side container?

An Open Side container is a container with a side opening: an entire side of the body opens, in addition to the rear doors. "HC," for High Cube, refers to a format raised by about 30 cm compared with the standard. "Used" means the unit has already been in service, then reconditioned at the depot. It is the largest format in the range.

The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded in HC structure. The side opening is via double doors pivoting at 270° or 180° over 12 meters. The long side hinges and seals are inspected at the depot and replaced in case of wear.

The used 40ft HC format offers 76.3 m³ of usable volume for an 18,080 kg allowable load, a value reduced by the long side cutout, with an interior height of 2.7 m. This combination of length, height and side access makes it suited to high-volume vertical cross-docking.

      In detail

Open Side: why a side opening?

A standard container only opens via its rear doors. To reach a pallet at the back, all the ones at the front must first be taken out. On a high-turnover logistics flow, this lost time adds up. The Open Side solves the problem: an entire side of the body opens.

The forklift can then access any pallet directly from the dock, without moving the others. This is the principle of cross-docking; direct transfer between a truck and a dock. Depending on the format, the opening is via double doors pivoting at 270° or 180°, or via folding accordion panels that clear the full length.

      Applications

Uses for a 40ft used HC Open Side container

Reconditioned, this long, tall format covers high-volume vertical cross-docking, at a reduced acquisition cost.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Recycling and circular economy

Vertical equipment to be dismantled, long structure sections and batches of tall parts for reuse, lined up sideways.

      • Public works; tall infrastructure

Tall prefabricated bridge elements, long vertical guardrails and large-scale street furniture sections.

      • Oil industry and offshore energy

Tall prefabricated pipeline sections, compact vertical drilling modules, long instrumentation equipment.

      • Industrial buildings and warehouses

Tall prefabricated frames, gantry sections, large-format cladding modules, vertical fit-out structures.

      Highlights

Why buy a 40ft used HC Open Side container

The used 40ft HC Open Side is the largest format in the side-opening range: it combines 40ft length, High Cube height and full access, at a much lower cost than new. The strengths below detail what this combination brings; and a point to watch, payload, to factor into the loading calculation.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Affordable price

A net saving compared with a new 40ft HC unit, with no compromise on side opening or HC height; the functions that give this format its value remain intact.

      • Maximum volume

76.3 m³ usable, the benchmark capacity of the secondary Open Side market; 40ft length and HC height combined in a single reconditioned body.

      • Additional height

30 cm more than a standard 40ft Open Side, enough to load long vertical pieces and stack pallets on two levels.

      • Body inspected at the depot

The long, tall structure is checked and the marine plywood floor inspected; a body that is refurbished, not simply repainted.

      • Hinges and seals inspected

Replaced in case of wear then sealing-tested over 12 m of opening wall, the sensitive point of a reused HC Open Side.

      • Re-validated compliance

ISO 6346 marking and the CSC plate are reissued after inspection; the Cargo Worthy rating remains possible for international maritime use.

      Applications

What is the price of a 40ft used HC Open Side container

The used 40ft HC Open Side follows a highly specialized secondary market. Availability depends on the arrival of long HC side-opening bodies.

      Four factors influence price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the price of the product, availability and delivery costs.

      • Demand for high-volume vertical cross-docking logistics

Recycling, public works, offshore energy and industrial buildings favor the used long HC.

      • Cost of Corten steel and side hardware

Original materials and possible replacement of long seals and hinges at the depot.

      • Shipping logistics pressures

Reconditioned 40ft HC Open Side supply remains extremely limited and depends on port arrivals.

      • Downstream costs

40ft HC road transport with bridge and tunnel clearance verification, heavy crane handling along the full length.
