In detail
What is a 20ft first-trip HC Open Side container?
An Open Side container is a container with a side opening: an entire side of the body opens, in addition to the rear doors. "HC," for High Cube, refers to a format raised by about 30 cm compared with the standard. "First-trip" means it is a new unit, out of the factory after a single trip.
The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded in HC structure. The side opening is via double doors pivoting at 270° or 180°, on reinforced hinges. The 28 mm marine plywood floor is sized for rolling loads.
The 20ft HC format offers 37.3 m³ of usable volume, 5.5 m³ more than a standard 20ft Open Side, for a 27,180 kg allowable load. Its interior height of 2.6 m allows two-level palletizing and the loading of long vertical pieces via side access.
In detail
Open Side: why a side opening?
A standard container only opens via its rear doors. To reach a pallet at the back, all the ones at the front must first be taken out. On a high-turnover logistics flow, this lost time adds up. The Open Side solves the problem: an entire side of the body opens.
The forklift can then access any pallet directly from the dock, without moving the others. This is the principle of cross-docking; direct transfer between a truck and a dock. Depending on the format, the opening is via double doors pivoting at 270° or 180°, or via folding accordion panels that clear the full length.
Applications
Uses for a 20ft first-trip HC Open Side container
Full side access and HC height open up stacked palletizing from the dock: a second row is placed vertically, and the forklift has the clearance needed for tall pieces.
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a 20ft first-trip HC Open Side container
The 20ft HC Open Side combines two advantages rarely found together in a single container: the extra height of the High Cube and full side access. The following points detail what this combination concretely brings to a logistics flow; from extra usable volume to loading speed, with no compromise on maritime robustness.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Optimized HC volume
37.3 m³ usable and 2.6 m of headroom; enough to stack pallets on two levels and load vertical packaging that a standard format could not accommodate.
-
Full side access
The double doors pivot at 270° or 180° and clear the entire side; each pallet is placed directly from the dock, with no need to move the others.
-
High payload
27,180 kg allowable, a level maintained despite the dual HC + side-opening constraint thanks to reinforcements built in at the factory; where a side cutout would weaken a standard body.
-
Dual loading mode
Side opening for fast cross-docking, rear doors at 270° for deep loading; the choice depends on the goods and the dock configuration.
-
Welded Corten HC body
The fully welded structure and self-weathering steel guarantee maritime robustness; ISO 6346 and CSC compliance, 28 mm marine plywood floor for rolling loads.
-
20ft HC format
Compatible with the standard road fleet and maritime terminals; remember to check height clearance on routes with low bridges.
Applications
What is the price of a 20ft first-trip HC Open Side container
The new 20ft HC Open Side belongs to a niche segment, at the intersection of side opening and the High Cube gauge. Its price reflects the limited availability of units combining these two specifications and the extra cost of reinforced opening hardware.
