What is a 20ft first-trip Open Side container?
An Open Side container is a container with a side opening: an entire side of the body opens, in addition to the rear doors. "First-trip" means it is a new unit, out of the factory after a single trip. The 20ft format is the mid-size format in the range.
The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded. The side opening is via double doors pivoting at 270° or 180°, which free up access along the full length. The 28 mm marine plywood floor withstands rolling loads.
The 20ft format offers 31.8 m³ of usable volume over 13.87 m² of floor space, for a 20,100 kg allowable load. It is the benchmark for cross-docking, loading long pallets and full access to goods with no need to move packages at the back.
In detail
Open Side: why a side opening?
A standard container only opens via its rear doors. To reach a pallet at the back, all the ones at the front must first be taken out. On a high-turnover logistics flow, this lost time adds up. The Open Side solves the problem: an entire side of the body opens.
The forklift can then access any pallet directly from the dock, without moving the others. This is the principle of cross-docking; direct transfer between a truck and a dock. Depending on the format, the opening is via double doors pivoting at 270° or 180°, or via folding accordion panels that clear the full length.
Applications
Uses for a 20ft first-trip Open Side container
Full side access transforms handling: the pallet is placed from the dock along the full length, the forklift has direct access and the crane handles long pieces.
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a 20ft first-trip Open Side container
The 20ft Open Side is the mid-size format in the side-opening range. The strengths below explain what side access concretely changes for a logistics flow; loading speed, versatility and maritime robustness retained.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Full side access
The double doors pivot at 270° or 180° and clear the entire side. Each pallet loads directly from the dock, with no need to move neighboring packages.
-
Compatible with cross-docking
The container aligns with a logistics dock and receives goods via direct transfer; loading time drops compared with a rear-doors-only format.
-
Dual loading mode
Side opening for fast cross-docking, rear doors at 270° for deep loading; the choice depends on the goods and the dock.
-
Welded Corten body
The self-weathering steel and fully welded structure guarantee maritime robustness; ISO 6346 and CSC compliance for multimodal transport.
-
28 mm marine plywood floor
A flat, continuous surface that withstands rolling loads and repeated forklift traffic.
-
Mid-size format
Compatible with the European road fleet and maritime terminals with no modification; the right balance between capacity and maneuverability.
