In detail
What is a 20ft used HC Open Side container?
An Open Side container is a container with a side opening: an entire side of the body opens, in addition to the rear doors. "HC," for High Cube, refers to a format raised by about 30 cm compared with the standard. "Used" means the unit has already been in service, then reconditioned at the depot.
The body, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, is fully welded in HC structure. The side opening is via double doors pivoting at 270° or 180°. The side hinges and seals are inspected at the depot and replaced in case of wear, before being put back into service.
The used 20ft HC format offers 37.3 m³ of usable volume, versus 31.8 m³ for a standard 20ft Open Side, for a 27,180 kg allowable load. Its interior height of 2.6 m allows two-level palletizing and the loading of long vertical pieces.
In detail
Open Side: why a side opening?
A standard container only opens via its rear doors. To reach a pallet at the back, all the ones at the front must first be taken out. On a high-turnover logistics flow, this lost time adds up. The Open Side solves the problem: an entire side of the body opens.
The forklift can then access any pallet directly from the dock, without moving the others. This is the principle of cross-docking; direct transfer between a truck and a dock. Depending on the format, the opening is via double doors pivoting at 270° or 180°, or via folding accordion panels that clear the full length.
Applications
Uses for a 20ft used HC Open Side container
Reconditioned, this tall format covers two-level cross-docking flows, where controlling acquisition cost remains decisive.
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a 20ft used HC Open Side container
The used 20ft HC Open Side combines two advantages rarely found together on the secondary market: High Cube height and full side access, at a much lower cost than new. The strengths below show what the depot inspection concretely guarantees and why used remains relevant on a format where function matters more than aesthetic finish.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Affordable price
A net saving compared with a new HC unit, with no compromise on side opening or HC height; the two functions that give this format its value remain intact.
-
Optimized volume
37.3 m³ usable, 5.5 m³ more than a standard 20ft Open Side; the 2.6 m of interior height allows pallets to be stacked on two levels.
-
Body inspected at the depot
The HC structure is checked, the marine plywood floor inspected and the sealing of the roof and panels checked; a body that is refurbished, not simply repainted.
-
Hinges and seals inspected
Replaced in case of wear then function-tested, since the long side opening is the sensitive point to secure before being put back into service.
-
Sustainable approach
Extending the life of an existing HC body avoids manufacturing a new unit and saves several tonnes of steel; a concrete footprint-reduction argument.
-
Re-validated compliance
ISO 6346 marking and the CSC plate are reissued after inspection; the Cargo Worthy rating remains possible to retain international maritime use.
