Hard Top ; Removable rigid roof

What is a Hard Top container?

A Hard Top container is recognised by one detail that changes everything: its steel roof is not welded to the box — it is entirely removable. Resting on a frame, it can be lifted by crane in minutes. The box then opens from the top, exactly like an Open Top.

This is precisely what distinguishes the Hard Top from the Open Top. Both allow vertical loading by crane or overhead crane, for machinery and equipment too tall or too heavy to pass through the rear doors. But where the Open Top recloses the box with a simple soft tarpaulin, the Hard Top replaces a rigid steel roof. The level of protection is not the same.

Once the cargo is in place, this hard top is replaced and locked onto its frame. The goods are then sheltered behind a true steel panel — watertight, impact-resistant, and tamper-proof. The Hard Top is therefore the format of choice when top loading is needed for sensitive or high-value loads that a tarpaulin would not adequately protect.

      • Removable roof

The rigid steel roof is not welded: it is lifted by crane in minutes. The box then opens fully from the top, for vertical loading of out-of-gauge cargo.
      • Enhanced protection

Once replaced, the rigid roof forms a true steel panel — watertight and impact-resistant. The protection far exceeds that of a soft tarpaulin, which is vulnerable to tearing and water ingress.
      • Secure locking

The hard top is locked onto its frame once the cargo is in place. This rigid, tamper-proof closure is suited to sensitive or high-value loads, where a tarpaulin would not suffice.
      • Tall loads

Machinery, industrial equipment, and bulky items too tall for the rear doors enter through the open roof. The Hard Top accommodates them without any height restriction.

      In detail

What is a used 20ft Hard Top HC shipping container?

A Hard Top container is a container with a removable rigid roof: its upper section is a steel sheet that is removed by crane to load cargo from above. The "HC" designation stands for High Cube: the container gains about 30 cm of height compared with the standard 8'6" format. The "used" designation refers to a reconditioned unit; a box that has already been in service, refurbished and inspected at a depot before being put back into circulation.

The box, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, retains its original HC structure after several service cycles. The roof sheet, the cleats, the locking bars that secure it, the seals, and the movable header, the pivoting top crossbar on the rear doors, are inspected or replaced at depot depending on their condition.

In the 20ft HC format, the unit offers 36.5 m³ of usable volume for 27,630 kg of payload, 4.1 m³ more than a standard 20ft Hard Top. Interior height reaches 2.65 m. This reconditioned unit is a proven solution for protected, height-oriented out-of-gauge transport, at a controlled cost.

      In detail

Hard Top or Open Top: rigid sheet or tarpaulin?

Both families load from the top, by crane. The difference lies in the roof. The Open Top closes its opening with a polyester tarpaulin tensioned over metal bows. The Hard Top closes it with a rigid steel sheet locked by cleats.

The rigid sheet changes two things. It holds up better over time: no tarpaulin to inspect or replace, and a lasting seal. It protects better: locked with cleats, it resists break-ins where a tarpaulin can simply be cut. In exchange, removing it requires a crane. The Hard Top is therefore the right choice when out-of-gauge cargo, OOG, for Out Of Gauge, meaning too tall to fit through the doors, travels for a long time or must stay protected.

      Applications

Uses of a used 20ft Hard Top HC shipping container

The reconditioned 20ft HC serves protected, vertical out-of-gauge logistics, where the used unit significantly reduces acquisition cost. Four uses illustrate this:

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use case connects the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Equipment manufacturing industry

Reconditioned vertical production machines, second-life industrial equipment that requires sheet protection.

      • Precision recycling

Scientific and medical equipment to be dismantled, protected vertical measuring instruments. This point reduces purchase risk by linking the container's condition to a usable on-site benefit.

      • Public works; tall structures

Tall guardrail sections, vertical street furniture, road signaling equipment. This point reduces purchase risk by linking the container's condition to a usable on-site benefit.

      • Rail industry; vertical components

Catenary sections, tall signaling equipment, prefabricated pylon structures. This point reduces purchase risk by linking the container's condition to a usable on-site benefit.

      Highlights

Why buy a used 20ft Hard Top HC shipping container

The used 20ft Hard Top HC combines the removable rigid roof, the movable header, and High Cube height, at a reduced cost. The strengths below show what the depot refurbishment guarantees on the moving parts and what the extra 30 cm of height brings.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Accessible price on the rigid-roof HC

The used unit represents a significant saving compared with a new HC, without losing any of the removable-sheet and movable-header functions.

      • Optimized volume

36.5 m³ of usable volume, 4.1 m³ more than the standard 20ft Hard Top, for 2.65 m of interior height. The extra vertical space serves tall parts.

      • Refurbished Corten steel HC box

The HC structure is checked at depot and the marine plywood floor inspected before delivery. The unit is restored, not sold as-is.

      • Roof sheet and cleats inspected

The sheet and its cleats are checked and replaced if degraded, then the roof-to-box seals tested. The rigid roof regains its seal.

      • Movable header preserved

The pivoting crossbar is function-tested and its seals inspected or replaced. The second out-of-gauge access route stays operational.

      • Re-validated compliance

The ISO 6346 and CSC plates are checked and Cargo Worthy status remains attainable for maritime use.

      Applications

What is the price of a used 20ft Hard Top HC shipping container

The used 20ft Hard Top HC follows a specialized secondary market. Its availability depends on the arrival cycles of reconditioned HC rigid-roof boxes.

Four factors drive the price observed:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.

      • Demand for protected, height-oriented OOG transport

Strong in the equipment manufacturing, precision recycling, public works, and rail segments, which favor used HC units.

      • Cost of Corten steel and the roof sheet

Original materials and the cost of replacing the sheet and HC seals at depot.

      • Maritime logistics pressures

Supply of reconditioned HC Hard Top units remains very limited. This factor helps explain the possible gap between an indicative price and the actual quote.

      • Downstream costs

HC road transport with gauge checks and crane handling. This factor helps explain the possible gap between an indicative price and the actual quote.
