What is a new 40ft Hard Top HC shipping container?
A Hard Top container is a container with a removable rigid roof: its upper section is a steel sheet that is removed by crane to load cargo from above. The "HC" designation stands for High Cube: the container gains about 30 cm of height compared with the standard 8'6" format. The "first-trip" designation means it is a new unit, straight from the factory after a single positioning journey. It is the maximum format in the range.
The new structure combines a Corten steel box, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, in the High Cube gauge, a large-format roof sheet secured by cleats, the bars that lock it, and removable by crane, and a marine plywood floor. The rear doors feature a pivoting movable header: the top crossbar pivots to let a tall part through without removing the roof.
The new 40ft HC frees up 74.5 m³ of usable volume (12.02 m × 2.34 m × 2.65 m) for 25,980 kg of payload, 8.5 m³ more than a standard 8'6" 40ft Hard Top. The 2.65 m interior height, combined with the movable header, allows loading of long out-of-gauge vertical parts, both through the rear doors and through the roof.

Hard Top or Open Top: rigid sheet or tarpaulin?
Both families load from the top, by crane. The difference lies in the roof. The Open Top closes its opening with a polyester tarpaulin tensioned over metal bows. The Hard Top closes it with a rigid steel sheet locked by cleats.
The rigid sheet changes two things. It holds up better over time: no tarpaulin to inspect or replace, and a lasting seal. It protects better: locked with cleats, it resists break-ins where a tarpaulin can simply be cut. In exchange, removing it requires a crane. The Hard Top is therefore the right choice when out-of-gauge cargo, OOG, for Out Of Gauge, meaning too tall to fit through the doors, travels for a long time or must stay protected.
