What is a used 40ft Hard Top shipping container?
A Hard Top container is a container with a removable rigid roof: its upper section is a steel sheet that is removed by crane to load cargo from above. The "used" designation refers to a reconditioned unit; a box that has already been in service, refurbished and inspected at a depot before being put back into circulation. The 40ft format is the range's long format.
The box, made of Corten steel, a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, retains its original 40ft structure after several service cycles. The roof sheet, the cleats, the locking bars, and the long seals are inspected or replaced at depot depending on their condition. The rear doors' movable header, the pivoting top crossbar, remains operational after reconditioning.
In the long 40ft format, the unit frees up 66 m³ of usable volume for 26,180 kg of payload and 28.1 m² of floor area. This reconditioned unit is a proven solution for protected, long out-of-gauge transport, at a controlled cost: industrial dismantling, shipbuilding, and construction.

Hard Top or Open Top: rigid sheet or tarpaulin?
Both families load from the top, by crane. The difference lies in the roof. The Open Top closes its opening with a polyester tarpaulin tensioned over metal bows. The Hard Top closes it with a rigid steel sheet locked by cleats.
The rigid sheet changes two things. It holds up better over time: no tarpaulin to inspect or replace, and a lasting seal. It protects better: locked with cleats, it resists break-ins where a tarpaulin can simply be cut. In exchange, removing it requires a crane. The Hard Top is therefore the right choice when out-of-gauge cargo, OOG, for Out Of Gauge, meaning too tall to fit through the doors, travels for a long time or must stay protected.
Applications
Uses of a used 40ft Hard Top shipping container
The reconditioned 40ft serves protected, long out-of-gauge logistics, where the used unit significantly reduces acquisition cost. Four uses illustrate this:
The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use case connects the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.
Highlights
Why buy a used 40ft Hard Top shipping container
The used 40ft Hard Top offers the long top-loading format, with the protection of a hard roof, at a reduced cost. "OOG" stands for out of gauge. The strengths below show what the depot refurbishment guarantees on this large box.
The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.
-
Accessible price for protected long OOG
The used unit represents a significant saving compared with a new 40ft, without losing any of the rigid-roof function.
-
Long format
66 m³ of usable volume offers the maximum capacity in the segment for transporting long out-of-gauge parts, under rigid-sheet protection.
-
Corten steel box refurbished at depot
The 40ft welded structure is checked and the marine plywood floor inspected before delivery. The unit is restored.
-
Roof sheet and cleats inspected
The sheet and its cleats are checked and replaced if degraded, then the roof-to-box seals tested over 12 meters. The roof regains its seal.
-
Movable header preserved
The pivoting crossbar is function-tested and its seals inspected. The second out-of-gauge access route stays operational.
-
Re-validated compliance
The ISO 6346 and CSC plates are checked and Cargo Worthy status remains attainable for continued maritime use.

What is the price of a used 40ft Hard Top shipping container
The used 40ft Hard Top follows an active secondary market. Its availability depends on the arrival cycles of reconditioned 40ft rigid-roof boxes.
Four factors drive the prices observed:
The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.
