What is a used 20ft IP2 shipping container?
The used 20ft IP2 container is a shipping container certified for the transport of low-level radioactive materials, previously in service and then refurbished. "IP2" stands for Industrial Package Type 2, a category defined by the IAEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency, safety standard. Its purchase price is lower than that of a new first-trip model.
Before resale, the decontaminable reinforced steel box is refurbished at depot and chemically decontaminated. IP2 compliance, drop and water-spray tests, must be requalified before being put back into service. The unit retains 31.8 m³ of usable interior volume and 32,000 kg of payload.

The IAEA SSR-6 standard classifies radioactive packages according to the hazard level of the material transported. The IP2 level is reserved for low-activity materials, known as LSA, for Low Specific Activity, and for objects with only surface contamination, known as SCO. It requires two tests: a 1.2-meter free fall onto a hard surface, and a water-spray test. These tests verify that the container withstands rough handling in transport.
