      Half-Height ; Dense loads

      What is a Half-Height container?

A Half-Height container measures approximately 1.30 m tall, roughly half the height of a standard container. Its length and width remain those of a standard container: only the height is halved.

This design addresses a paradox in the transport of dense loads. An ore, a metal block, or compact bulk material weighs very heavy for a small volume. Loaded into a standard container, it reaches the permitted weight limit while the box is still two-thirds empty; all that wasted volume is transported for nothing, and the load concentrated at the bottom creates an unstable centre of gravity.

The Half-Height eliminates this excess volume. The box fills to the top at the precise moment it reaches its maximum payload. Its low height also lowers the centre of gravity, making the lifting and stacking of heavy loads significantly more stable and safer.

      • Reduced height

The box stands approximately 1.30 m tall, half the height of a standard container. Length and width are unchanged; only the volume that is useless for dense cargo is removed.
      • Dense cargo

The format is dimensioned for heavy goods with a low volume. The box fills to the top at the precise moment it reaches its maximum load, with no cubic metre wasted.
      • Low centre of gravity

The reduced height lowers the centre of gravity of the loaded unit. Lifting and transporting heavy loads gain in stability, with a significantly reduced risk of tipping.
      • Safe handling

This stability makes the Half-Height the reference format for bulk minerals and compact metal parts, handled safely by crane or overhead crane.

      In detail

What is a used 20 ft Half-Height Open Top container?

A Half-Height container is a shipping container with a reduced exterior height: 1.295 m, compared to about 2.59 m on a standard format. The Open Top variant receives a flexible cover; a reinforced polyester tarpaulin stretched by straps over removable metal bows. The term "used" means it is an inspected used unit, sourced from a used fleet that is inspected before being put back on sale.

This format combines the load density of the half-height with full top opening: simply undo the straps and roll back the tarpaulin to free up complete access to the floor, without removing the cover. The inspected used structure is built on a Corten steel casing, a weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion, fully welded, and a reinforced steel floor.

In the 20 ft format, the unit offers approximately 14.5 m³ of usable volume for a 21,790 kg payload. It's the reference for transporting concentrated dense loads, heavy bulk, ore, rubble, metals, soil, that a crane or excavator loads directly from the top.

For a Used version, National Conteneur uses this technical base as a reference, then qualifies each unit according to its actual condition: structure, weatherproofing, doors, floor, markings, documents and equipment specific to the product family. The technical information therefore remains that of the model, while cosmetic condition, availability and certificates depend on the batch offered.

      In detail

      Why choose a half-height container?

A standard shipping container is about 2.59 m high. For many dense goods, rubble, ore, scrap metal, this height serves no purpose: the load is heavy but not bulky, and the container reaches its weight limit long before it's full.

The half-height brings the exterior height down to 1.295 m. The container keeps a high payload capacity, but becomes much lower. Two advantages follow: the crane or excavator load from the top without lifting the bucket very high, and the container stays within the standard road transport gauge; no need for a specific low-bed transport.

      Applications

Uses for a used 20 ft Half-Height Open Top container

The tarpaulin cover rolls back in a few moves: the crane, overhead crane or excavator can attack the cargo directly. Four industrial uses take advantage of it:

The applications below show the contexts in which this format is most relevant. Each use case links the on-site need to the concrete benefit of the container.

      • Construction and earthworks

Rubble, excavated material, contaminated soil, construction aggregates; direct loading by excavator on site.

      • Open-pit mines and quarries

Raw ore, slag, mineral sands, heavy aggregates; loading by bucket or conveyor belt at the screening outlet.

      • Bulk metal recycling and sorting

Steel scraps, unsorted scrap metal, metal shavings; loading by grapple crane or magnet.

      • Steel and foundry industry

Dense metal parts, concentrated raw material batches; loading by workshop overhead crane directly onto the casing at the dock.

      Highlights

Why buy a used 20 ft Half-Height Open Top container

The inspected used Half-Height Open Top container combines reduced height, built for dense loads, with top loading under a tarpaulin. The strengths below explain what this combination brings to handling heavy bulk, from loading to road delivery.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Reinforced polyester tarpaulin cover

The tarpaulin is removable via straps and the metal bows can be dismantled. Access to the floor is fully freed up for bulk loading.

      • Top loading without dismantling

The crane, overhead crane or excavator deposit the load directly from above. This is a decisive productivity gain on extraction sites.

      • 1.295 m exterior height

The casing stays within the standard road transport gauge. No specific low-bed transport is required, unlike a full-height container.

      • 21,790 kg payload

Despite its reduced height, the casing handles a high dense load. It reaches its weight limit right as it fills up, without wasted volume.

      • Corten casing and reinforced steel floor

The weathering steel structure and reinforced floor withstand the stresses of heavy bulk and falling materials.

      • ISO 6346 and CSC compliance

The unit moves through multimodal transport, maritime, rail, road, without any modification.

      Applications

What is the price of a used 20 ft Half-Height Open Top container

The Half-Height Open Top is a niche market: small production runs, demand concentrated among construction, mining and steel operations that favor direct loading by crane or excavator.

Four factors drive the price observed:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability and delivery costs.

      • Demand for top-loaded heavy bulk transport

The intensity of construction sites, mining operations and metal sorting cycles sustains demand.

      • Cost of Corten steel and the polyester tarpaulin

Casing, reinforced tarpaulin and removable metal bows weigh into the product's price.

      • Maritime logistics pressure

Half-Height Open Top supply remains more limited than that of standard Dry containers.

      • Downstream costs

Standard road transport without a low-bed trailer thanks to the 1.295 m height, crane or excavator handling for loading.
