      High Cube ; Extra height

What is a High Cube container?

A High Cube container, often abbreviated HC, matches a standard Dry container in every way: same length, same width, the same Corten steel, the same standardised lifting corners. Only one dimension changes: the height. The HC stands 2.896 m overall height versus 2.591 m for a standard Dry, approximately 30 cm more.

These 30 cm translate into nearly one cubic metre of extra usable volume on a 20-foot unit, and considerably more on a 40-foot. This is a decisive gain for voluminous but lightweight cargo that hits the height limit before reaching the weight limit — a standard container would then be transporting wasted air under the roof.

The extra height also makes the High Cube the most sought-after conversion base. With an interior height of nearly 2.70 m, it allows space for a technical false ceiling, insulation, and floor finish while maintaining comfortable headroom — something a standard container, once converted, does not provide.

      • Extra height

2.896 m overall height, versus 2.591 m for a standard Dry container. These extra 30 cm are gained without changing the length or width — the unit remains as manageable and transportable as a standard container.
      • Voluminous, lightweight cargo

The HC is designed for goods that take up volume without weighing much — foam, textiles, furniture, packaging. They reach the container's height well before its load limit: the extra 30 cm avoid transporting wasted air.
      • Comfortable conversion

The interior height of nearly 2.70 m allows insulation, a technical false ceiling, and floor finish to be integrated while maintaining genuine headroom. It is the reference format for converting a container into a livable office, home, or workshop.
      • ISO standard

Despite its height, the High Cube retains standard ISO lifting corners and fittings. It stacks, secures, and is handled throughout the maritime, rail, and road chain exactly like a standard container.

      In detail

What is a used 20 ft High Cube shipping container?

The used 20 ft High Cube shipping container offers the volume advantage of the 9'6" format, 2.89 m outside, 2.69 m inside, at a reduced price compared to the new model. "High Cube" refers to a container raised 30 cm above the standard Dry. Drawn from the global maritime fleet after several rotations, it is refurbished at our French depots before sale.

Its usable capacity remains identical to the new model: 37.4 m³ for a 28,130 kg allowed load. A few marks of use remain on the surface, aged paint, localized oxidation, lashing marks, with no impact on transport function or on compliance. The Corten steel box, a self-weathering anti-corrosion steel, keeps its original rigidity.

      In detail

How is a used container inspected?

Before every sale, the unit undergoes a full overhaul at the depot. Watertightness is tested by water spraying, the structure inspected against the light from the inside, the floor replaced in case of significant wear, and the seals checked. An inspection document is given to the buyer.

The CSC plate, Convention for Safe Containers, is then re-validated by an accredited body. The unit receives "Cargo Worthy" (CW) status, which certifies its fitness for international maritime transport. It's the best trade-off for HC height on a controlled budget.

      Applications

Uses of a used 20 ft High Cube shipping container

For height needs without a new-unit budget, the used 20 ft HC is the most rational trade-off in the segment.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-site need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Bulky industrial storage

Tall equipment, upright furniture or stock stacked on two levels within 37.4 m³ of sealed space.

      • Maritime re-shipping

ISO compliance preserved and CSC re-validated for export on every global shipping route.

      • Office or living conversion

Economical base for a comfortable living module; the height allows full insulation cladding.

      • Agricultural or wine-growing outbuilding

Shelter for tall equipment, vertical seed drills, cellar equipment or winery storage.

      Highlights

Why buy a used 20 ft High Cube shipping container

The used 20 ft High Cube offers the extra 4.2 m³ of vertical volume from the 9'6" format, at 30 to 50% below the new price. The strengths below show what depot overhaul concretely guarantees, and why, on a format chosen for its volume, surface patina changes nothing about its use.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Competitive price

A used unit is the best budget trade-off for enjoying HC volume, without the premium of a first-trip unit. The savings go straight back into the project or stock.

      • Preserved capacity

37.4 m³ usable, 13.7 m² footprint and 2.69 m internal height, strictly identical to the new model. Overhaul takes nothing away from capacity.

      • Re-validated compliance

The CSC plate is reissued after inspection and Cargo Worthy status is granted. The container remains fit for continued maritime use, not just storage.

      • Prior inspection

Structure, watertightness and closures are checked before delivery, and an inspection document is given to the buyer. The exact condition of the unit is known.

      • Eco-friendly approach

Extending the life of an existing container avoids manufacturing a new unit and saves several tons of steel.

      • French availability

Stock is on hand at the depots, with no manufacturing lead time. Delivery happens quickly depending on the department, an advantage for an urgent need.

      Applications

What is the price of a used 20 ft High Cube shipping container

The used 20 ft HC follows an active secondary market, where logistics flows, shipping operator fleet retirements and European demand for vertical volume all intersect.

      Four dynamics drive these prices:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help you read a quote by distinguishing the product price, availability, and delivery costs.

      • Shipping demand

On the Asia-Europe route, HC height stays favored as long as shipping operators keep their rotations active.

      • Logistics bottlenecks

A reconditioning delay or a port strike can tighten the arrival of used units in France for several weeks.

      • Corten steel cost

The secondary market partly absorbs steel price swings, but a sustained increase pulls used values upward.

      • Downstream costs

Transit to French depots, yard handling and re-certification add to the purchase value.
