      Isothermal ; Passive insulation

      What is an isothermal container?

An isothermal container is a thermally insulated container that produces no cold. Its walls, roof, and floor are lined with polyurethane foam — an insulator that strongly slows heat exchange between the interior and the exterior. It carries no refrigeration unit.

This is the essential difference from a Reefer container. The Reefer is active: its refrigeration unit produces cold and continuously corrects any temperature drift. The isothermal is passive: it merely delays the inevitable. Cargo loaded cold warms up slowly, cargo loaded warm cools down slowly; the isothermal extends the delay without ever bringing the goods back to a set point.

This passive logic defines its applications. The isothermal container suits short hauls, buffer storage, and goods loaded already at the right temperature. Since it requires no electrical supply — no socket, no generator set — it offers a significantly simpler and more cost-effective solution than a Reefer, whenever active refrigeration is not strictly necessary.

      • Passive insulation

The walls, roof, and floor are lined with polyurethane foam. This insulator strongly slows thermal exchange but produces no cold: it delays temperature drift without correcting it.
      • No power supply required

No electrical connection is needed — no shore power, no generator set, no refrigeration unit to maintain. This simplicity eliminates all power logistics and makes it reliable on isolated sites.
      • Short-haul journeys

An isothermal container maintains an acceptable temperature over limited durations and distances. Beyond that, the difference with the outside eventually prevails: cargo must then be loaded already at the correct temperature.
      • Cost-effective solution

With no refrigeration unit to buy or maintain, the isothermal container costs far less than a Reefer. It is the rational alternative whenever active refrigeration is not strictly required.

      In detail

What is a 20ft used insulated container?

An insulated container is a fully insulated body: its walls slow heat exchange between the goods and the outside. It does not produce cold; it preserves it. "Used" means the unit has already been in service, then reconditioned: inspected and refurbished at the depot. The 20ft format is the pivotal format of refrigerated logistics.

The body, made of Corten steel and stainless steel, is fully welded. Corten steel is a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion. The insulation, made of polyurethane foam, an insulating foam molded between two walls, is checked by a thermal test before being put back into service. The aluminum T-bar floor offers a flat, draining surface for rolling loads.

The used 20ft format offers 27.30 m³ of usable volume for a 27,580 kg allowable load. Its standard exterior height of 2.591 m makes it compatible with the entire European road fleet. It is the benchmark format for food logistics and catering, at a lower cost than a new unit.

      In detail

Insulated or Reefer: what is the difference?

The insulated container and the Reefer belong to the same refrigerated family, but rely on two opposite principles. The Reefer, a refrigerated container, carries an active cooling unit: it produces its own cold and maintains a chosen temperature, from −25°C to +25°C. It must stay permanently plugged into a 380V three-phase electrical supply.

The insulated container, on the other hand, produces no cold at all. It simply slows heat exchange through its insulation. It works without electricity and without a cooling unit to maintain. To extend autonomy, eutectic plates are added; cold accumulators frozen in advance in a cold room. On the 20ft format, passive autonomy reaches 24 to 48 hours. The insulated container is therefore suited to flows where active cooling adds no value.

      Applications

Uses for a 20ft used insulated container

Reconditioned, this pivotal format targets food logistics and catering at controlled cost.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Regional food distribution

Rounds of under 24 hours for fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products, from depot to points of sale, with eutectic plates.

      • Institutional catering and canteens

Keeping ready meals from the production center to the consumption site, with no power required.

      • Temporary food storage

Extra cold capacity during production peaks or cold room maintenance.

      • Sensitive cosmetics and chemicals

Short-distance transport of heat-sensitive products between factory and platform, with no sudden temperature variation.

      Highlights

Why buy a 20ft used insulated container

The 20ft used insulated container offers a standard-format passive cold room at the lowest price in the segment. The strengths below show what the depot inspection guarantees on the one truly critical element, insulation, and why a body with no cooling unit lends itself particularly well to reuse.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Affordable price

Net saving compared with new, with no compromise on insulation performance; systematic thermal test.

      • Body inspected at the depot

Corten and stainless steel structure checked, polyurethane insulation tested, aluminum floor cleaned and drainage confirmed.

      • No power supply required

Usable immediately, with no 380V connection or truck plug. This reference is used to verify the container's suitability for transport, handling or regulated storage.

      • Sustainable approach

Reusing an existing body avoids manufacturing a new unit and its carbon footprint.

      • Minimal maintenance

No cooling unit to maintain, no refrigerant to recharge. This reference is used to verify the container's suitability for transport, handling or regulated storage.

      • Re-validated compliance

ISO 6346 marking and CSC plate reissued; the Cargo Worthy rating remains possible for maritime use.

      Applications

What is the price of a 20ft used insulated container

The used 20ft insulated segment follows an active secondary market. Availability depends on the arrival of converted Reefer bodies put back on the market.

      Four factors influence price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the price of the product, availability and delivery costs.

      • Demand on short cold-chain circuits

Last-mile food delivery and institutional catering support the used 20ft price.

      • Cost of insulation materials

The original polyurethane foam reflects past raw material cycles; the F-gas regulation, which governs fluorinated gases, also weighs on blowing agents.

      • Shipping logistics pressures

Supply depends on the pace of arrivals of converted Reefer bodies put back on the used market.

      • Downstream costs

Standard road transport and handling equivalent to a Dry container, with no power supply or refrigeration fuel management.
