      Isothermal ; Passive insulation

      What is an isothermal container?

An isothermal container is a thermally insulated container that produces no cold. Its walls, roof, and floor are lined with polyurethane foam — an insulator that strongly slows heat exchange between the interior and the exterior. It carries no refrigeration unit.

This is the essential difference from a Reefer container. The Reefer is active: its refrigeration unit produces cold and continuously corrects any temperature drift. The isothermal is passive: it merely delays the inevitable. Cargo loaded cold warms up slowly, cargo loaded warm cools down slowly; the isothermal extends the delay without ever bringing the goods back to a set point.

This passive logic defines its applications. The isothermal container suits short hauls, buffer storage, and goods loaded already at the right temperature. Since it requires no electrical supply — no socket, no generator set — it offers a significantly simpler and more cost-effective solution than a Reefer, whenever active refrigeration is not strictly necessary.

      • Passive insulation

The walls, roof, and floor are lined with polyurethane foam. This insulator strongly slows thermal exchange but produces no cold: it delays temperature drift without correcting it.
      • No power supply required

No electrical connection is needed — no shore power, no generator set, no refrigeration unit to maintain. This simplicity eliminates all power logistics and makes it reliable on isolated sites.
      • Short-haul journeys

An isothermal container maintains an acceptable temperature over limited durations and distances. Beyond that, the difference with the outside eventually prevails: cargo must then be loaded already at the correct temperature.
      • Cost-effective solution

With no refrigeration unit to buy or maintain, the isothermal container costs far less than a Reefer. It is the rational alternative whenever active refrigeration is not strictly required.

      In detail

What is a 40ft used HC insulated container?

An insulated container is a fully insulated body: its walls slow heat exchange between the goods and the outside. It does not produce cold; it preserves it. "HC," for High Cube, refers to a format raised by about 30 cm compared with the standard format. "Used" means the unit has already been in service, then reconditioned at the depot. It is the largest format in the insulated range.

The body, made of Corten steel, is fully welded. Corten steel is a self-weathering steel that naturally resists marine corrosion. The insulation, made of polyurethane foam, an insulating foam molded between two walls, is checked by a thermal test at the depot before delivery. The aluminum T-bar floor guarantees flatness and drainage after cleaning.

The used 40ft HC format offers 65.6 m³ of usable volume for a 29,350 kg allowable load, with an interior height of 2.557 m. The combination of a long, tall, insulated large format sets it apart from other units on the secondary market.

      In detail

Insulated or Reefer: what is the difference?

The insulated container and the Reefer belong to the same refrigerated family, but rely on two opposite principles. The Reefer, a refrigerated container, carries an active cooling unit: it produces its own cold and maintains a chosen temperature, from −25°C to +25°C, or even −40°C on certain 40ft HC models. It must stay permanently plugged into a 380V three-phase electrical supply.

The insulated container, on the other hand, produces no cold at all. It simply slows heat exchange through its insulation and the mass of its body. It works without electricity and without a cooling unit to maintain. To extend autonomy, eutectic plates are added; cold accumulators frozen in advance in a cold room. On the 40ft HC, passive autonomy reaches 36 to 60 hours with large-format plates.

      Applications

Uses for a 40ft used HC insulated container

Reconditioned, this tall large format targets high-volume logistics with vertical packaging.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • Multi-customer food distribution

Rounds from a regional platform to supermarkets and distribution chains, up to 22 floor pallets with high stacking.

      • Wine and brewing industry

Transport and buffer storage of bottles, kegs and vertical packaging, sheltered from seasonal thermal shocks.

      • Cosmetics for regional export

Multi-reference transport between factory and export platform, vertical racks protected from temperature variation, with no power supply.

      • Large-format veterinary pharmaceuticals

Multi-customer transport of heat-sensitive products between laboratory and regional distributors, with eutectic plates.

      Highlights

Why buy a 40ft used HC insulated container

The used 40ft HC insulated container offers the largest passive insulated volume in the range, combining 40ft length and High Cube height, at controlled cost. The strengths below show what the depot inspection guarantees on insulation and what the extra 30 cm of height bring.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Affordable price

Net saving compared with a new 40ft HC unit, with insulation checked by thermal test.

      • Maximum volume

65.6 m³ usable, up to 22-23 floor pallets stacked on two levels, 2.557 m interior height.

      • Additional height

30 cm more than a standard 40ft insulated container, for multi-layer packaging and tiered palletizing.

      • Body inspected at the depot

Corten structure checked, polyurethane insulation tested, aluminum floor cleaned. This reference is used to verify the container's suitability for transport, handling or regulated storage.

      • No power supply required

Usable immediately, with no 380V connection or truck plug. This reference is used to verify the container's suitability for transport, handling or regulated storage.

      • Re-validated compliance

ISO 6346 marking and CSC plate reissued; the Cargo Worthy rating remains possible for maritime use.

      Applications

What is the price of a 40ft used HC insulated container

The used 40ft HC insulated container follows a restricted secondary market, less liquid than the standard 40ft and more sensitive to the conversion cycles of Reefer HC units put back on the market.

      Four factors influence price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the price of the product, availability and delivery costs.

      • Demand on high-volume vertical flows

Multi-customer food distribution and large-format pharmaceuticals with no power supply support prices.

      • Cost of insulation materials

The polyurethane foam applied over the large surface of a 40ft HC reflects past raw material cycles and the F-gas regulation, which governs fluorinated gases.

      • Shipping logistics pressures

The availability of the 40ft HC depends on the pace of arrivals of converted Reefer HC units; a segment with concentrated supply.

      • Downstream costs

HC road transport with clearance verification on certain low-clearance routes, handling equivalent to a Dry HC container.
