      Isothermal ; Passive insulation

      What is an isothermal container?

An isothermal container is a thermally insulated container that produces no cold. Its walls, roof, and floor are lined with polyurethane foam — an insulator that strongly slows heat exchange between the interior and the exterior. It carries no refrigeration unit.

This is the essential difference from a Reefer container. The Reefer is active: its refrigeration unit produces cold and continuously corrects any temperature drift. The isothermal is passive: it merely delays the inevitable. Cargo loaded cold warms up slowly, cargo loaded warm cools down slowly; the isothermal extends the delay without ever bringing the goods back to a set point.

This passive logic defines its applications. The isothermal container suits short hauls, buffer storage, and goods loaded already at the right temperature. Since it requires no electrical supply — no socket, no generator set — it offers a significantly simpler and more cost-effective solution than a Reefer, whenever active refrigeration is not strictly necessary.

      • Passive insulation

The walls, roof, and floor are lined with polyurethane foam. This insulator strongly slows thermal exchange but produces no cold: it delays temperature drift without correcting it.
      • No power supply required

No electrical connection is needed — no shore power, no generator set, no refrigeration unit to maintain. This simplicity eliminates all power logistics and makes it reliable on isolated sites.
      • Short-haul journeys

An isothermal container maintains an acceptable temperature over limited durations and distances. Beyond that, the difference with the outside eventually prevails: cargo must then be loaded already at the correct temperature.
      • Cost-effective solution

With no refrigeration unit to buy or maintain, the isothermal container costs far less than a Reefer. It is the rational alternative whenever active refrigeration is not strictly required.

      In detail

      What is a 40ft first-trip insulated container?

An insulated container is a fully insulated body: its walls slow heat exchange between the goods and the outside. It does not produce cold; it preserves it. "First-trip" means it is a new unit, out of the factory after a single positioning journey. The 40ft format is the benchmark for large-capacity transport under controlled temperature.

The body combines stainless steel and aluminum. Insulation is provided by polyurethane foam panels, an insulating foam molded between two walls, applied over the entire body. The aluminum-rail floor drains liquids and offers a flat, smooth surface.

The 40ft format delivers 61.3 m³ of usable volume for a 26,680 kg allowable load, over 27.1 m² of floor space. Its standard exterior height of 2.591 m makes it compatible with all European terminals and semi-trailers.

      In detail

Insulated or Reefer: what is the difference?

The insulated container and the Reefer belong to the same refrigerated family, but rely on two opposite principles. The Reefer, a refrigerated container, carries an active cooling unit: it produces its own cold and maintains a chosen temperature, from −25°C to +25°C. It must stay permanently plugged into a 380V three-phase electrical supply.

The insulated container, on the other hand, produces no cold at all. It simply slows heat exchange through its insulation. It works without electricity and without a cooling unit to maintain. To extend autonomy, eutectic plates are added; cold accumulators frozen in advance in a cold room. On the 40ft format, passive autonomy reaches 48 to 72 hours, which covers multi-customer food flows with no power constraint.

      Applications

      Uses for a 40ft first-trip insulated container

The large 40ft format is dedicated to high-volume logistics flows, with no power supply.

The applications below show in which contexts this format is most relevant. Each use links the on-the-ground need to the container's concrete benefit.

      • High-volume food buffer storage

Capacity for 25 to 26 floor Europe pallets of fresh, frozen or controlled-ambient produce, on sites without a 380V supply.

      • Regional multi-customer distribution

Rounds from a platform to supermarkets, institutional catering or purchasing groups, with eutectic plates.

      • Seasonal food storage

Extra cold capacity during production peaks; grape harvests, crop harvests, year-end holidays.

      • Large-capacity pharmaceutical logistics

Multi-customer transport of heat-sensitive products between production site and logistics hub, with passive cold devices.

      Highlights

      Why buy a 40ft first-trip insulated container

The new 40ft insulated container is the large-volume passive cold room: it insulates up to 25-26 Europe pallets with no power supply at all. The strengths below explain what this capacity and the absence of a cooling unit concretely change for high-volume logistics.

The strengths below explain what each technical choice brings to the project. They help compare the product with a less specialized alternative or a different condition.

      • Large insulated volume

61.3 m³ usable, up to 25-26 floor Europe pallets; the benchmark for high-volume logistics with no power supply.

      • No power supply required

Deployment on any site, with no 380V connection or generator. This reference is used to verify the container's suitability for transport, handling or regulated storage.

      • Minimal maintenance

No cooling unit, no refrigerant gas, no moving parts. This reference is used to verify the container's suitability for transport, handling or regulated storage.

      • Compatible with large-format eutectic plates

Passive cold autonomy up to 48-72 hours depending on accumulator density. This reference is used to verify the container's suitability for transport, handling or regulated storage.

      • Original compliance

ISO 6346 marking and CSC plate for multimodal transport; maritime, rail, road.

      • Lower operating cost

Compared with a 40ft Reefer, for uses where active cooling is not required.

      Applications

What is the price of a 40ft first-trip insulated container

The new 40ft insulated container is a specialized shipping trade product. Its price depends on the insulation market and the conversion cycles of Reefer bodies straight from the factory.

      Four factors influence price variations:

The factors below explain why the price can vary from one quote to another. They help read a quote by distinguishing the price of the product, availability and delivery costs.

      • Demand on high-volume flows

The growth of multi-customer food distribution and institutional catering supports demand for the 40ft format.

      • Cost of insulation materials

Polyurethane foam applied over a large surface, the walls of a 40ft container, follows raw material cycles; the F-gas regulation, which governs fluorinated gases, also weighs on blowing agents.

      • Shipping logistics pressures

Converting 40ft Reefer units to insulated containers depends on port arrivals and the manufacturing cycles of convertible units.

      • Downstream costs

40ft semi-trailer road transport and handling equivalent to a Dry container, with no generator to mobilize.
